Dutch Museums Publish 2 Hidden Pages from Anne Frank's Diary

The lost pages were reproduced after years of study

Researchers have published for the first time writing on two pages of Anne Frank's diary which she covered over with brown paper, discovering dirty jokes and a teenager's interest in sex.

The 13-year-old scribbled the pages on September 28, 1942 - less than three months after she and her family went into hiding from the Nazis in the secret annex of an Amsterdam home.

The Jewish teenager apparently covered up the pages because she anxious that other people in her hideout would read them, as they contain a series of dirty jokes and her thoughts on sex education, said Ronald Leopold, director of Anne Frank House in Amsterdam. But the institution did share some of what it says were 33 lines about sex education and prostitution also on the pages.

Her only surviving family member, her father, published her diary in 1947.

The story is set in 1942 when a 13-year-old Jewish girl and her family fled their Amsterdam home and went into hiding following the Nazis' occupation of Holland.

Cooped up in an attic for months on end, Anne Frank jotted down some of her observations about life in her diary.

Peter de Bruijn, one of the partners in the diary research and a senior researcher at the Huygens Institute for the History of the Netherlands, said the uncovered text is significant because it shows Frank's first attempt at writing in a more literary tone.

"Anyone who reads the passages that have now been discovered will be unable to suppress a smile", he said. "They make it clear that Anne, with all her gifts, was above all also an ordinary girl".

"Anne Frank writes about sexuality in a disarming way".

Announcing their discovery on Tuesday, the Anne Frank Foundation believes the text helped the teenager express her sexuality. Because Frank's diaries are so susceptible to damage, they typically only get inspected once every 10 years and those doing the job avoid touching the pages, according to the New York Times.

Researchers were at pains to point out that it is not the first time that Frank wrote about sex in her diary. The Anne Frank House did not release the text itself along with the announcement.

Anne died in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp three months before her 16th birthday, in 1945.
