Gaza border falls quiet after Egypt brokers ceasefire

(Emphasis added.) The United Nations reported last year ("Gaza: Ten Years Later", pages 8-9, July 2017), that 2007 to 2010 (phase 1) "saw some 6,500 rockets fired from Gaza to Israel", 2010 to 2014 "saw more than 11,800 rockets and mortars fired towards Israel" (phase 2), and from 2015 until present, saw "some 200 rockets have been fired from Gaza into Israel" (phase 3).

But it launched no new attacks on Wednesday and signaled it was prepared to halt the hostilities if the cross-border barrages ended. In fact, the Israeli military campaign began on October 29, 1956 and Israel pulled out its troops from the Gaza Strip in March 1957 - within five months of the start of the operation. Israeli forces targeted encampments that appeared to have been vacated in anticipation of attack.

The spokesman, Emmanuel Nahshon, said that the Israeli government was trying to reverse Indonesia's decision, the website reported.

The attacks continued throughout Tuesday, triggering dozens of rocket sirens in southern Israel and wounding five Israelis, one of them suffering moderate injuries. Gaza's streets were filled with shoppers.

Islamic Jihad spokesman Daoud Shehab, acknowledging a ceasefire was in effect, said its success would depend on "whether Israel will refrain from any military escalation against Gaza".

"Hamas has felt a sense of failure at reaching the fence and therefore over the past two weeks there has been a change in the number of terror groups reaching the fence under Hamas's direction", the official said.

Israeli Education Minister Naftali Bennett said Israel won't accept criticism for defending its children.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who heads the Fatah faction that is dominant in the occupied West Bank and is a bitter rival of Hamas and Islamic Jihad, said Israel had used "vigorous aggression" against Gaza that proved it did not want peace.

Israel said some 70 rockets and mortar bombs were fired from Gaza at its southland.

At least 121 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza during protests that started on March 30, according to Al Jazeera.

Israeli fire has killed more than 110 Palestinians, majority during the Hamas-led protests, which climaxed on May 14.

The demonstrations and surge in violence come amid growing frustration among Palestinians over the prospects for an independent state.

Tuesday's violence followed weeks of deadly unrest along the border between Israel and the blockaded Palestinian enclave.

"This is another wave of attacks by the IDF against the terrorist targets of the Hamas terrorist organization, which bears responsibility for all events in and from the Gaza Strip, as well as the severe attacks against Israeli citizens", said the IDF Spokesperson in a statement.

Hamas and the smaller Islamic Jihad militant issued a joint statement Tuesday, claiming shared responsibility for firing rockets and projectiles against Israeli communities near Gaza. It also said around 100 rockets and mortars fired from Gaza either exploded in Israel or were intercepted by air defences.
