Good Guy with Gun Intervenes, Shoots Alleged Gunman on High School Campus

'Things could have gone much worse': Former student is shot by officer during gunfire exchange at Dixon High School

The suspect has been named as Matt Milby, 19.

Dixon High School was evacuated after the shooting, and family members were asked to pick students up at a local park where they were brought in buses.

Officials say that Dallas chased the suspect from the school which led to the pair exchanging gunfire.

The suspect is in custody and is receiving medical treatment.

There is no school tomorrow for Dixon High Schoolers on Thursday. The high school is located at 300 Lincoln Statue Drive in the town.

Senior Caleb Carlson, 19, said he's known Milby since middle school, when they were friends.

Authorities say students did exactly as they were trained to do when a school resource officer and a former student exchanged gunfire at a northern IL high school.

'Because of his heroic actions, countless lives were saved. That eyewitness, who completed class courses in 2017 but will walk in graduation in 2018, says they were discussing caps and gowns when they heard loud pops.

Authorities say that Milby acted alone. "Sounds like firecrackers, and then there's dead silence". "He was stumbling in, just sprinting through the gym saying - everyone run, everyone run".

Milby's mother, who said she grew up with Dallas, said she "honestly would have to tell him thank you" for not fatally shooting her son. The website was the first to name Milby as the suspect. So this was a surprise. I'm glad he's alive.

Milby fired several shots near the west gym, was confronted by Dallas and started running west on Armory Drive. Dixon Police Department created the resource officer position in 2000 to help prevent this type of occurrence.

The investigation is being conducted by the Illinois State Police.

US Vice President Mike Pence lauded the "heroic actions" of Dixon Police Officer Mark Dallas, who shot and wounded the gunman. He was confronted by an armed resource officer and Dixon city manager Danny Langloss said the alleged gunman fired at the officer. His fearless actions saved a lot of lives, ' he said.

Sauk Valley reports that Milby had a reputation in the area as being a "troublemaker".

Dixon senior Brianna Johnson says Milby seemed nice but was recently angry all the time.

"It has gone through my mind a couple times on it happening here and me being scared about that, but I never actually thought it would happen", said Cibu. "He really put his life in danger and to save all the students and faculty in that school it was remarkable".
