Rafa Nadal storms past Denis Shapovalov into the quarter-finals

Rafael Nadal

Nadal immediately outlined his intention to put his opponent under pressure, engineering eight break points in the teenager's opening two service games. Serving at 3-5 to stay in the set, Shapovalov fell behind 0-30 when Nadal hammered a return of first serve for a victor. The seven-time champion opened his campaign with a commanding 6-1, 6-0 win over the 31st ranked Damir Dzumhur to reach the third round.

Defending champion Elina Svitolina of Ukraine fought back from a first set wipeout against Daria Kasatkina to win 0-6, 6-3, 6-2.

The 37-year-old American was never in contention in the match with Kontaveit winning by a 6-2 scoreline in the first set before defeating Williams 7-3 on a tiebreak in the second.

Shapovalov posted his biggest win to date when he beat Nadal in three sets in the round of 16 at last year's Canadian Open in Montreal.

"I think Rafa played incredible today", said Shapovalov.

Fognini slammed his racket midway through the second set and received a warning from the umpire but otherwise held his composure to follow up his win over Dominic Thiem.

Fognini battled hard to reach the quarters, coming from 2-4 down in the opening set to beat German Peter Gojowczyk 6-4 6-4. Djokovic, a four-time victor at Rome, had five aces in the match and will next face Spaniard Albert Ramos-Vinolas, who rallied past eighth-seeded American John Isner 6-7 (5), 7-6 (2), 7-6 (5) in two hours, 53 minutes.

Rounding out the day's action, 10th-seeded Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta bested American Steve Johnson 6-4, 2-6, 6-4; Frenchman Benoit Paire upset 14th-seeded Argentine Diego Schwartzman 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 and Great Britain's Kyle Edmund defeated 16th-seeded Frenchman Lucas Pouille 6-2, 7-6 (3).

Although six seeded players suffered exits on Wednesday (May 16), Juan Martin del Potro and Marin Cilic were able to advance.

To stay in top spot, Halep needs to progress further than No 2 Caroline Wozniacki, who was facing 15th-seeded Anastasija Sevastova in a late match.

Three-time victor Maria Sharapova ousted Daria Gavrilova 6-3, 6-4 and will play fifth seed and French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko who saw off Britain's Johanna Konta 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Halep will next play either U.S. Open champion Sloane Stephens or seventh-seeded Caroline Garcia.

The victor will play Anett Kontaveit, who ousted 1999 champion Venus Williams 6-2, 7-6 (3).

Thiem was already looking ahead to the French Open, which starts on May 27. She will next face former No 1 Angelique Kerber, who routed Maria Sakkari of Greece 6-1, 6-1.
