Russia, Israel agree to drive off Iranian military from Syrian border

Jordan also made it clear that military maneuvers ‎involving Iranian-backed forces could trigger a ‎military confrontation between Iran and Israel.

The move comes as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu prepares to discuss Iran with several European leaders, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Emmanuel Macron, and UK Prime Minister Theresa May, next week.

The secret agreement was hashed out over the phone between the Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and his Israeli counterpart Avigdor Lieberman.

Meanwhile, Israel is meeting with USA officials to hammer out the details of a joint strategy for dealing with Iran's presence in the Middle East.

Government forces recently dropped leaflets on rebel-held areas in Daraa, warning of an imminent offensive and urging anti-Assad fighters to lay down their arms. The agreement was reportedly reached in December a year ago and seeks joint coordination to counter Iran's missile program and its proxy network across the Middle East.

Iran pledged to stay out of fighting in southwestern Syria during talks with Israel that took place in Amman, Jordan, according to Elaph, a Saudi-owned website as reported by Ma'ariv. It stressed that the Syrian army was determined to retake all parts of Syria. Israel suspects Syria's ally Iran of seeking to establish a military presence close to territory it controls and has repeatedly struck Syrian and Iranian targets in Syria when it felt threatened. "I think they understand that if the Iranians continue on the present course this will lead to escalation and will blow their plans out of the water".

Separate reports suggest Israel has agreed not to get involved so long as Russian Federation can keep Iranian and Hezbollah forces out of the area. The report said a Jordanian mediator carried messages between the sides.

Iran's ambassador to Jordan, Dr. Mostafa Moslehzadeh, reportedly received instructions from senior officials to conduct the negotiations with Israel in Amman. But the area has been tense following a series of recent Israeli strikes on Syrian and Iranian forces.
