Second British rugby player dies on tour in Sri Lanka

They had played one game on Saturday with CR & FC in Colombo and following the game several members of the team had visited a nightclub in Colpetty.

However one of the two players admitted to the hospital has died while receiving treatment at the hospital.

Howard, 25, died in hospital Sunday, based on an announcement from Durham Metropolis Rugby and Soccer Membership (DCRFC) and the UK Overseas Workplace.

Sri Lanka Police said a 26-year-old man had died in hospital at 12:00 local time on Sunday.

Durham City Rugby Club, which oversees the team, said in a statement the pair suffered "non-rugby related breathing problems".

The player, Bett Thomas Reid was admitted to a private hospital due to a breathing difficulty last Sunday (May 13).

Durham RFC has asked the privacy of the players' families be "respected and upheld at this hard time".

The pair, along with other teammates, had gone to a nightclub in the capital Colombo and returned in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The two players are said to have complained of breathing difficulties at around 10am.

Mr Howard's death was confirmed in a club statement issued on Monday.

Police spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekera reportedly told the Sri Lankan Daily Mirror that the team was staying in a hotel in Colombo after playing their opening match against Ceylonese Rugby and Football Club.

A Foreign Office spokeswoman confirmed that they were dealing with the incident and said: "Our staff are supporting the family of a British man following his death in Sri Lanka, and are in contact with the Sri Lankan hospital services".
