Senate Intelligence Panel Agrees Russia Intervened to Help Trump

Donald Trump Jr

A new wrinkle in that statement came about on Wednesday after Senate testimony from Trump Jr. on the meeting was released to the public. Based on the first-take news accounts, however, I'm going to go out on a limb and say I infer there is nothing in them to refute President Trump's denial of "collusion" in purported Russian efforts to assist in his election.

The two, plus a handful of others from the Trump campaign (including the president's son-in-law Jared Kushner) met with the lawyer at Trump Tower in NY.

British publicist Rob Goldstone asked Trump Jr.to attend the meeting, claiming a Russian prosecutor had "offered to provide the Trump campaign with some official documents and information that would incriminate Hillary and her dealings with Russia and would be very useful to your father".

Allies of President Donald Trump in the House have argued that while Russian Federation did interfere in the election, its strategy was simply to create chaos in USA elections, not to favor any particular candidate for the presidency. "We further assess Putin and the Russian Government developed a clear preference for President-elect Trump".

According to a transcript of his interview, Akhmetshin told Senate investigators how Veselnitskaya discussed with Trump Jr. the background of a complex Russian tax-fraud case that led to the passage of a 2012 USA law known as the Magnitsky Act, named after Sergei Magnitsky, the Russian whistleblower who died in a Moscow prison in 2009 after exposing the tax fraud.

Manafort, who has been charged with a variety of non-campaign related offenses as a result of Mueller's investigation, was not interviewed by the panel.

But Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley announced in January that he wanted to release transcripts from his committee's interviews because people "deserve to have all the facts, not just one side of this story".

As Mother Jones reported, Kaveladze told the committee in March that he witnessed another Russian oligarch make a phone call to one of Putin's top aides to secretly request a meeting between Trump and Putin.

He argued that it would not make sense for Trump to be involved in drafting a statement about the meeting if he really had no idea about the meeting or what was discussed.

Trump has forcefully denied any collusion between his campaign and Russian Federation, and the House Intelligence Committee shuttered its investigation earlier this year, with GOP members saying they found no evidence of collusion.

A GOP-led Senate committee said it backs the conclusion of the United States intelligence community that Russian Federation meddled in the 2016 presidential election to boost Donald Trump - a stand at odds with an earlier finding by Republican members of a House panel.

But in a statement, Burr said: "Committee staff have spent 14 months reviewing the sources, tradecraft, and analytic work, and we see no reason to dispute the conclusions". Mark Warner, a Democrat from Virginia who serves as the committee's vice chair, who echoed Burr's sentiments.

Yet in April, Comey appears to have contradicted himself during an interview with Fox News host Bret Baier, where he denied testifying before the House Intelligence Committee that he was told by the Federal Bureau of Investigation who interrogated Flynn that they believed he was telling the truth.
