Starbucks to close U.S. stores for bias training on Tuesday

Starbucks Finalizes Plans for Racial Bias Training, Including an Appearance From Common

Starbucks will close 8,000 of its US locations for a portion of the afternoon on May 29, with over 175,000 of its employees undergoing racial bias training.

Starbucks Corp appealed to customers for forgiveness in a row over racial profiling on Tuesday, saying its behavior toward two black American customers last month had been reprehensible as it closed 8,000 stores for anti-bias training. Starbucks locations in the Jacksonville area will close starting at 2:30 p.m. Schultz, CEO Kevin Johnson and musician and activist Common will serve as virtual guides.

The Seattle-based coffeehouse chain said it consulted with both national and local experts to develop the curriculum for the training program, which will seek to help employees identify and overcome biases in the workplace. Starbucks' training will "address implicit bias, promote conscious inclusion, prevent discrimination and ensure everyone inside a Starbucks store feels safe and welcome".

Independent coffee shops may see a small uptick in traffic during the Starbucks closings, said Arsalan Pourmand, owner of Flux Coffee in Farmingdale. The men, who had previously asked for the code needed to use the store's bathroom, said they were waiting for a friend. Training is expected to last about four hours.

"We introduced the first of our unconscious bias trainings in 2017, which are rolling out now to our. teams across our company", Target's statement reads.

Within two minutes after entering the store, the manager called 911 and police officers arrested the men for trespassing and walked them out of the store in handcuffs when they refused requests to leave.

"We've made it clear that we won't be a rubber stamp to validate their programming", McGhee said. If customers are disruptive, employees are advised to step in. If so, employees are instructed to approach the customer, while another employee watches, and respectfully ask the customer to cease the offensive action.

Factoring in the company's $22.39 billion in annual sales, and dividing it by the number of days in the year, but not adjusting for the relative strength of particular days and dayparts, suggests that Starbucks revenue is about $61.3 million per day.

She wouldn't give too much more away about the training, but said Perception's workshops typically encouraged participants to think about how they were "socialised" to think about certain groups, and to challenge that thinking.

The company plans to share its materials with the public after the training, and hopes that other businesses will make use of the tools in their own workplaces.
