Summiting Sherpas Set Pair of Mount Everest Records

Kami Rita Sherpa poses for

With the ascent of 8,848-meter high Qomolangma, 48-year-old Sherpa has set a new record by climbing the world's highest peak for maximum times.

While many Everest climbers train for months for the arduous journey, Sherpa credits the physical demands of her job and the fact that she was raised up above 13,000 feet for her ability to climb "off the couch".

A total of 94 foreign climbers and Sherpas made it to the top of Everest on Wednesday alone.

Ms Lhakpa, 44, reached the peak for a ninth time via the northern Tibetan route, her brother Mr Mingma Gelu Sherpa said.

Alpenglow Expeditions said in a statement: "Multiple teams using the same device have experienced similar oxygen system failures".

Before leaving for Lukla, the gateway to Mt. Everest, late last month, the father-of-two told reporters in Kathmandu that he had no plans to stop climbing the mountain. He first climbed Mt. Everest in 1994. She lives most of the year in the US state of CT and has a son and two daughters.

Kami is a professionally trained Sherpa while Lhakpa is a housewife and avid climber.

The daughter of a yak herder, Ms Lhakpa worked as a porter and kitchen hand on trekking and mountaineering expeditions, before becoming a climber herself.

Kami Rita apparently hopes to reach 25 times before retiring.

"It has obviously excited me with the feeling that I am going to set a new world record".

The problems occurred during what is being described as the third "summit wave" of climbers pushing towards the summit in this pre-monsoon season, after the ropes were fixed from both the Nepalese and Tibetan sides of the mountain.

He completed the seven climbs in 177 days - nine days quicker than the previous record - after reaching the top of Everest on Monday.
