This Saudi director just took part in a historic protest at Cannes

Cannes Film Festival 2018 Cate Blanchett Michael B Jordan and Marion Cotillard make appearances on Day 6

82 women including Blanchett who is president of the jury and Stewart took part in the protest to signify the 82 female directors (7 of whom were part of mixed gender teams) that have premiered at the festival since 1946 compared to 1,645 male directors.

Cannes Film Festival director Thierry Fremaux joined others Monday in signing a new campaign to improve gender parity at worldwide film festivals, it's been reported.

Also joining were the five female members of this year's Cannes jury: Cate Blanchett, Kristen Stewart, Ava DuVernay, Lea Seydoux and Burundian singer Khadja Nin.

That's a disparate fact that was protested this week by female icons across the industry in the coastal resort town, where 82 actresses, directors, writers and producers congregated on the festival's famous steps. She is the head of the jury.

Jane Campion is the only female director to have won the Palme d'Or, for her 1993 film "The Piano". The pledge, dubbed the "Programming Pledge for Parity and Inclusion in Cinema Festivals", was signed May 14 during an Cannes event hosted by 5050×2020, the French women's group behind the red carpet protest for gender equality earlier in the festival.

On the carpet, Kristen dished on what it was like to be apart of the women's march that was held during the festival the day before.

Cate said: 'Women are not a minority in the world, yet the current state of the industry says otherwise. As women, we all face the typical problems, but today we stand together on this ladder and symbolize determination and progress. She said her fellow female stars were calling for "a world that allows all of us, in front and behind the camera, to thrive shoulder to shoulder with our male colleagues". We hope that it will reinforce the realisation that the world is not the same anymore.

Blanchett concluded, "We acknowledge all of the women and men who are standing for change".
