Trump says US team in NKorea to plan summit

North Korea-US summit on track, says Moon, after candid talks with 'friend' Kim Jong-un

Across Asia, administration officials have been dispatched to carry out Trump's directive.

The weekend talks were the latest twist in a week of diplomatic ups and downs over the prospects for an unprecedented U.S. And both Kim and South Korea's president, Moon Jae-in, have seized on that opening. Aides are cautiously optimistic this time will be different, even as they continue to express private misgivings about the compressed timeline to arrange the meeting.

They agreed to have their top officials meet again June 1.

North Korea's Kim Yong Chol, vice chairman of the ruling Workers' Party's Central Committee, was scheduled to fly to the United States on Wednesday after speaking to Chinese officials in Beijing, South Korea's Yonhap news agency said, citing an unidentified source.

In a Sunday tweet, Trump spoke of the summit in the present tense by saying that "our United States team has arrived in North Korea to make arrangements for the Summit between Kim Jong Un and myself".

The Trump administration is believed to have granted him a temporary waiver this time to allow him to NY, where North Korea has a diplomatic mission to the United Nations.

Trump said they are still considering June 12 in Singapore for the summit with Kim Jong Un.

In addition to those talks, White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said a "pre-advance team" left for Singapore - where the summit has been expected to take place - on Sunday morning to work on logistics.

Koro Bessho told a small group of reporters Tuesday that Japan would like to see "comprehensive, verifiable, irreversible, dismantlement" of North Korea's nuclear weapons as well as its chemical and biological weapons. The goal of the preliminary meetings includes drafting a communiqué for both leaders to approve at their historic meeting, the USA official said. But the North Korean leader also said he was unsure whether he could trust the United States to end hostile policies against North Korea and provide security assurances if the country does abandon its nuclear weapons, according to Moon.

The on-again-off-again talks, centered around denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula, have seen a flurry of activity in recent days since Trump sent a letter to Kim Jong Un calling off their high-stakes diplomatic date. In his book "The Art of the Deal", Trump wrote: "The worst thing you can possibly do in a deal is seem desperate to make it".

Japan's United Nations ambassador says "maximum pressure" should be maintained on North Korea until it takes concrete actions toward eliminating its weapons of mass destruction.

"During the South Korea-U.S. summit, President Trump said the U.S.is willing to clearly put an end to hostile relations (between the U.S. and North Korea) and help (the North) achieve economic prosperity if North Korea conducts denuclearization".

"We're looking at June 12 in Singapore".

Instead, those details would be hammered out at the working level in the months and years to come.

The timeline aside, Trump may seek a deal that would look better than the Iranian nuclear accord from which the USA has recently withdrawn.

Mr Trump told reporters on Saturday that there was "a lot of goodwill", that the original plan was still being considered and that "that hasn't changed". And of course, as you said, the key issue is denuclearization. "It's good that the two will meet, and my hope is that would set the stage for more realistic, more direct, specific conversations later on".

Randall G. Schriver, the assistant secretary of Defense for Asian and Pacific Security Affairs, and Allison Hooker, director for Korea on the White House's National Security Council, were also part of the U.S. delegation that traveled to North Korea. We don't know what they're discussing.

The State Department said earlier that a team was in Panmunjom, which straddles the border inside the demilitarized zone, or DMZ, separating the North and South Korea.
