AMC is launching its own MoviePass-like subscription service

AMC Theater

On Wednesday, AMC Theatres amped up the movie subscription rivalry it has with MoviePass by announcing AMC Stubs A-List, a $20-a-month service that lets you see three movies per week.

The new AMC Stubs A-List program will allow members to pay $19.95 per month, which grants entrance to up to three "regular" movies each week. For $19.95 (plus tax) per month, you can get three free movies a week at any location and in any format (including IMAX, Dolby, RealD 3D, Prime and Big D).

"We understand the comparison, but we're focused on our own program and on delivering the very best, most reliable movie-going value option in the entertainment industry, which is what we believe AMC Stubs A-List provides to our guests", the representative told The Verge. According to the company, MoviePass is accepted at more than 91 percent of theaters nationwide, including AMC Theatres.

"Heard AMC Theaters jumped on board the movie subscription train".

The membership also includes all of the benefits of AMC Stubs Premiere including free upgrades on popcorn and soda, free refills on large popcorn, express service at the concession stand and box office and no online ticketing fees. Since MoviePass slashed its monthly fee, questions have mounted over the long-term viability of its economic model.

MoviePass has attracted 3 million members, but the stock price of the service's parent company, Helios and Matheson, has dropped from $38 a share to 44 cents a share. MoviePass works at most theaters in the US, not just AMC, because the company pays full price for each and every ticket. AMC Stubs-A-List launches on Tuesday, June 26.

MoviePass and AMC have been at odds since soon after the movie subscription service announced its unlimited plan last summer. "We want to make movies more accessible, they want more profit".

Conversely, the MoviePass unlimited plan is still cheaper at $9.99 per month to see one movie a day, though the company has recently implemented cost-savings and anti-fraud measures like ticket verification and limits on repeat viewings of the same film.
