Anthony Bourdain and Kate Spade's deaths are part of a growing problem in the US

Guns drugs & poverty drive US suicide epidemic – report

Twenty-five states have seen a 30% or more increase in suicides, and Louisiana Health Department Suicide Prevention Coordinator Danita Leblanc says there's a disturbing statistic in the report.

From 1999 to 2016, suicide rates increased in each state by anywhere from 5 percent to 57 percent.

The report said people without known mental health problems were more likely to die by firearms than those with known mental health problems. The state of North Dakota had the highest increase. Twenty-five states experienced a rise in suicides by more than 30%, the government report finds. "Suicide is one of the top 10 causes of death in the United States right now, and it's one of three causes that is actually increasing recently, so we do consider it a public health problem - and something that is all around us", Schuchat said. The stigma attached to mental health services often prevents people from seeking help. However, Nevada had the ninth-highest suicide rate in the country.

The report also cites the need to reduce "access to lethal means" but without explicitly discussing firearms or controversial issues such as gun control legislation.

"Death by suicide is the ultimate Stage 4 event in the progression of many mental health conditions, whether or not they have ever been recognized and labeled". The rising suicide rate for women, then, is "increasing but at a much, much lower level" than for men.

In a closer look at suicides in 2015, CDC researchers found that 29.4% took place within two weeks of a crisis - most commonly a breakup or other problem related to an intimate-partner relationship. Churches, schools and police also need to get better at recognizing people at risk for suicide and helping them get treatment or feel less isolated, he said. She's urging the media to be careful with what they say.

"It's just one of those things you can't hardly believe", said Culbreath. One meta-analysis looking at 10 studies of the aftermath of 98 celebrity deaths found a 0.26 percent rise in suicide rates in the months after celebrities kill themselves.

"CDC data shows that suicide happens to everybody", he said.

South Florida resident Felicia Monroe knows first hand what it's like to lose someone to suicide.

The highest risk group is the youth because of the changes and stress they are consistently going through, according to Walker.

Mental Illness is one major cause.
