BERNIE'S PARTY: Sanders Congratulates PROGRESSIVE Dems After Primary Wins

Bernie Sanders congratulates progressive candidates on shock primary wins

In the same way that Ocasio-Cortez defied the odds to defeat Crowley, a 10-term veteran who also is the fourth-ranking Democrat in the House, Pressley is looking to prove political handicappers wrong by defeating Capuano in the September 4 primary. Despite Crowley, aka the "King of Queens", raising far more money than Alexandria, she pulled off a stunning upset.

"I'm an organizer in this community, and I knew living here and being here and seeing and organizing with families here, that it was possible", Ocasio-Cortez after her victory.

Struggling for words, the politician who won nearly 60 per cent of the vote, said: "I can not believe these numbers right now, but I do know that every person here worked there butt off to change the future of the Bronx and Queens".

"She is the flawless intersectional candidate", said Nomiki Konst, an adviser to the Sanders-backed progressive group Our Revolution.

The friend who introduced them, Mina Vahedi (Wheelock'11, '14), says she mentioned Ocasio-Cortez's campaign to her political junkie cousin last summer, who replied, "She has no chance at all".

She grew up in the Bronx.

.

On Tuesday night, the impossible happened in New York City.

"There's no denying when you watch her [campaign] video that she's a deeply inspiring person", she said, "and I feel like people really gravitated toward her leadership and hope".

She's a member of the Democratic Socialists of America.

At BU, Ocasio-Cortez was president of Alianza Latina, BU's largest Latin American student organization.

Some of the shock may have worn off on Wednesday, but 28-year-old Ocasio-Cortez, like the rest of her party, was still trying to make sense of her come-from-nowhere win. "She is likely to be in headlines for years to come", the Times summed up, describing the outcome as "the most significant loss for a Democratic incumbent in more than a decade, and one that will reverberate across the party and the country". I mean, Alexandria took it to a different level, right. "And that is part of the structure of this agency", she said. She went to Texas to see conditions at immigrant detention centres near the border. In her early 20s, she started a book publishing company to paint her hometown in a different light and she promoted education and literacy in the borough.

She has repeatedly rejected the supposed divide between economic concerns and "identity politics", a frequently invoked diagnostic tool for Democratic races, as a false dichotomy.

These races echoed the divide in the Democratic Party that was highlighted by the primary race between Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders, a breach which has only intensified since the 2016 election. She would read historical and political books old and new. "I think that we have the grounds to do it".

Democratic women and women of color are running for office in historic numbers this year. Her father ran his own small business and her Puerto Rican mother cleaned houses. "We need somebody fierce like that - a woman", Bronx voter Marcy White said. She campaigned on Medicare for All, a federal jobs guarantee, and on abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). It's early, but the win could be viewed as a potential victory for NY restaurant workers, who routinely endure long hours, low pay, high-cost health care, and insanely high rent. We look at that entire legislative history with shame.
