Canada's PM is back-stabber unworthy of Trump's time, trade adviser says

Donald Trump withdraws endorsement of G7 joint statement, slams Trudeau

"POTUS is not going to let a Canadian prime minister push him around on the eve of this", Kudlow said, using an acronym for president of the United States. Can't do it in person.

"Canadians are polite and reasonable, but we will also not be pushed around", Trudeau said.

Mr Trump's strained relationship with the rest of the G7 was in evidence on Saturday when he arrived late for the opening session, with Mr Trudeau addressing a gathering that included an empty chair where the president was meant to be.

"They should let Russian Federation come back in, because we should have Russian Federation at the negotiating table", Trump said. "He's not going to allow the people to suddenly take pot shots at him".

The current Liberals responded in much the same manner as former prime minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau did upon learning of the 1971 insult by Nixon.

"To our allies: bipartisan majorities of Americans remain pro-free trade, pro-globalization & supportive of alliances based on 70 years of shared values", McCain tweeted. "We need to stand with our democratic allies". "We're the closest partners in the world and you don't want to see a dispute over one particular issue poison everything".

The US President gave a press conference at the seat of the summit in the Canadian town of La Malbaie shortly before he left the meeting to head for Singapore, where on June 12 he will meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, Efe reported.

A few hours earlier, Trudeau had told reporters that all seven leaders had come together to sign the joint declaration.

Trump called Trudeau "very dishonest and weak" on Twitter on Saturday and then sent Kudlow and trade adviser Peter Navarro to hammer the message home on Sunday morning news shows in an extraordinary assault on a close USA ally and neighbor.

In response, the European Union is preparing new tariffs set to hit U.S. exports ranging from jeans to bourbon whiskey.

The US has slapped a 25% tariff on imports of steel and 10% on aluminium from countries including the United Kingdom and the rest of the European Union.

On CNN's "State of the Union", Trump economic adviser Larry Kudlow said the White House was angered by Trudeau's comments during the news conference that Canada would stand up for itself and that recently imposed US tariffs on steel and aluminum are "insulting".

But Mr Trump insisted it would be an "asset" to have Vladimir Putin back at the summit table. He reiterated his longstanding view that the USA has been taken advantage of in global trade, adding, "We're like the piggy bank that everybody's robbing, and that ends".

At a rare solo news conference before heading to Asia, Trump said he pressed for the G-7 countries to eliminate all tariffs, trade barriers and subsidies in their trading practices.

"If they retaliate, they're making a mistake", Trump said.

Navarro appeared on "Fox News Sunday", and Kudlow was on CNN's "State of the Union" and CBS' "Face the Nation" and Harper spoke on Fox's "Sunday Morning Futures".
