CEO Tim Cook Rejects Report Apple May Abuse Facebook Data

Analyst Ming Chi Kuo predicts that Apple may release these three iPhones. MacRumors

In this case, advertisers, data companies create a fingerprint of the device based on configurations, the fonts installed, the plug-ins installed and use that to target customers.

The Apple CEO stated how iOS 12 and macOS Mojave will come with increased privacy and security for users.

In January, Jana Partners and the California State Teachers' Retirement System or CalSTRS wrote a letter to Apple about growing "societal unease" about overuse of technology and in particular smart phones, which at some point could turn people away from buying Apple products.

Facebook said it "disagreed" with the report and that the agreements with device makers were far different from those with third-party developers including one which shared data with the political firm Cambridge Analytica. Craig Federighi, senior VP of software engineering at Apple, told a standing-room pack with almost 6,000 software developers at the Worldwide Developers Conference of Apple in Silicon Valley, stated that as the "like" buttons and the "comment" fields on Facebook can be utilized to track the subscriber, so this year Apple is shutting those down. "So this year, we are shutting them down".

Apparently, despite changes to Facebook's privacy policies over the years, many smartphone makers continue to have unrestricted access to personal data of users.

Cook says, with their partnership with Facebook, they simply made the ability to share in the operating system simpler, which did not need access to user data. He said that the idea to do something like this "is so foreign" to Apple.

While the feature will make launching apps and using the keyboard faster on newer phones, it's also an indicator that Apple is catering to older phones as more people are hanging onto their devices for longer.

Facebook's Like button is one of the more notorious trackers.

Apple also showcased a new system that makes it more hard to gather information about users as they browse across the web.

At the time, Marc Rotenberg of the Electronic Privacy Information Center called the disclosures "a giant surveillance warning label".

Here's some context: Many websites (including Bloomberg Opinion) have small icons to let people easily share articles or other pieces of web information to social networks, including Facebook, or to "like" that piece of digital information.

The presentation from Apple will begin today, may 4, at 20:00 Kyiv time and it will open an annual developers conference WWDC 2018.
