Elon Musk says disgruntled Tesla employee was behind "extensive" sabotage

Elon Musk emails Tesla workers about 'extensive and damaging sabotage' by an employee

Musk warns, however, that he suspects "there may be considerably more to this situation than meets the eye", stating that there is a "long list of organisations that want Tesla to die".

Potential organizations that may wish to harm Tesla, at least according to Musk, include Wall Street short-sellers, oil and gas companies that "don't love the idea of Tesla advancing the progress of solar power & electric cars", and big gas and diesel auto company competitors.

Tesla is dismissing more than 3,000 workers from its California headquarters and beyond, according to a report from Bloomberg.

Fremont police didn't receive or respond to any calls for service at the Tesla plant over the weekend, according to a spokeswoman. However, it's not the affordable version of the Model 3 that this line is making.

Tesla has not exactly had the best of weeks with a fire at the factory last Sunday and a few days before that, a Tesla being driven by director Michael Morris and wife Mary McCormack caught fire, with Ms McCormack posting footage to YouTube. In it, he talks about "another odd incident that was hard to explain": a small fire at the Fremont facility on Sunday-the fifth since 2014. Musk said the fire could just be a "random event", but quoted businessman and engineer Andrew Grove's famous line that "only the paranoid survive".

He wrote: "Most of the time, when there is theft of goods, leaking of confidential information, dereliction of duty or outright sabotage, the reason really is something simple like wanting to get back at someone within the company or at the company as a whole".

Musk can not afford for Tesla to fail.

CNBC managed to obtain Musk's entire email revealing the saboteur, which you can read in full. Smoldering in an air filter in the welding area of Tesla's body line was extinguished in a matter of seconds, she said.

The tweet was in response to a question that referenced short sellers being concerned about Tesla's recent manufacturing expansion.

The mass layoffs offer a glimpse of the surging pressure the company is facing to keep up with the ambitious goals Musk has set. The company sued a former oil-services executive in 2016 for impersonating Musk in an email to former Tesla CFO Jason Wheeler.

The billionaire tech entrepreneur has long advanced a viewpoint of Tesla-against-the-world, helping build his upstart vehicle company's reputation as a nail in the tire of Big Auto.
