Emergency UN General Assembly meeting on Gaza called for Wednesday

Lionel Messi

The protests began under the name Great March of Return, a campaign organized by Palestinians to rally on Fridays near the Gaza-Israel border to demand Palestinian refugees be allowed to return to what is now Israel.

"The use of live ammunition against journalists covering the Gaza protests shows how little regard Israel has for their safety", CPJ's Middle East and North Africa Program Coordinator Sherif Mansour said from Washington, D.C.

"It was a must-go for us".

Arab countries turned to the General Assembly in December after the United States vetoed a Security Council vote on a resolution to condemn its decision to move its embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Many expressed frustration at the worldwide community's perceived indifference to their plight in the coastal enclave, which has been under a stringent Israeli-led and Egypt-enforced blockade since 2007.

"When it became known that it would be in Jerusalem, the first thing we did was get in touch with A.F.A.to alert them about the sensitivity and delicate situation that this implied, including because it could involve security issues", the Argentine foreign minister, Jorge Faurie, said in an interview with local radio station Mitre.

"Washington's gross insult and hostile act against the Palestinian people, symbolized in the split-screen reality of the embassy inauguration in Jerusalem while there was an ongoing massacre in Gaza, is not going to prevent us from talking about peace".

Protester Saleh Nasser Abu Ras directed his ire squarely at Arab nations, accusing them of standing by idly while offering only words of condemnation. "People and children are dying because we are defending our land", he exclaimed.

Al-Qedra denounced Israeli army soldiers who fired tear gas against ambulances trying to help the wounded east of Khan Yunis, in the southern Gaza Strip while protest organisers put the number of demonstrators at 10,000. Some threw rocks and burned tyres, according to the statement.

Tuesday's incidents came after weeks of deadly demonstrations and clashes along the Gaza-Israel border, beginning on March 30.

Among the dead Friday was 15-year-old Haitham al-Jamal.

The 23-year-old staggered back with the gas-spewing canister embedded in his cheek, his shirt bloodied, before collapsing.

Quds Day, an annual event that falls on June 8 this year, is observed on the last Friday of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan in Iran along with several Arab countries.

Israel captured east Jerusalem in the 1967 Middle East war and later annexed the area in a move not recognised by the worldwide community. During the Six-Day War, Israel seized the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

"Israel takes a grave view of the attacks on it and its communities by Hamas and Islamic Jihad from the Gaza Strip", Netanyahu said. But this is not a peaceful protest. He said the military's assumption is that Hamas's naval forces have "civilian, off-the-shelf diving equipment" to help them reach the Israeli coast, including propulsion systems, sometimes known as underwater scooters, as well as closed breathing systems that do not release bubbles "in order to make detection more hard".
