Ex-EDL leader Tommy Robinson jailed at Leeds court

Tommy Robinson supporters climb gates of Downing Street after his arrest

Mr. Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, was arrested outside Leeds Crown Court on Friday, and pleaded guilty to contempt of court after publishing information that could prejudice an ongoing trial.

Tommy Robinson has been sentenced to 13 months in jail for contempt of court.

Judge Geoffrey Marson QC sentenced the right-wing activist to 13 months for contempt of court, telling him his actions may cause a long-running trial to be re-run at the cost "hundreds and hundreds of thousands of pounds" to the taxpayer.

The 35-year-old was broadcasting on social media outside the city's crown court where a trial was ongoing.

The hour-long footage had been watched 250,000 times within hours of being posted on Facebook, the court heard.

At Friday's hearing Matthew Harding, defending, claimed Robinson had "deep regret" for what he had done. This Act usually applies to journalists in dictating how they cover court trials but since Robinson's reach is so large, it can apply to him as well. It is about justice, and it is about ensuring that a trial can be carried out justly and fairly.

According to the group's website, they stand for "free speech in practice" and "free speech in the law".

His sentence has been revealed for the first time today, following a request from the Independent and other publications to lift reporting restrictions on the case.

Robinson was reporting on a trial involving 29 defendants who were facing charges in relation to child sex abuse and neglect.

One of Britain's most notorious anti-Muslim campaigners was arrested for disrupting a trial last week and was sentenced that same day to a year in prison, which the judge ordered news media not to report on. That's one of the most important rights that we have. The responsibility to exercise that freedom of speech within the law. "If the jurors in my present trial get to know of this video, I will no doubt be faced with an application to discharge the jury".

Marson also said that the witnesses would have the trauma of having to give evidence before another jury.

Robinson founded the far-right EDL in 2009. On Robinson he tweeted "He's a convicted fraudster who broke strict reporting laws, without which trials of alleged rapists would collapse and alleged rapists would walk free".

The restrictions were ridiculed online, as details of the case were easily available on social media and some USA outlets, with many prominent figures sharing details and the hashtag #FreeTommy trending on Twitter. Robinson had been arrested multiple times before last week, for crimes including fraud and assault, according to Leeds Live, and Twitter has permanently banned him for claiming that Islam is murderous.
