Flying vehicle startup backed by Google founder offers test flights

Flying car backed by Google co-founder Larry Page

Landing skids enable takeoff from land but are presumably designed for floatation, as the Flyer is meant to be used above water.

Test drives are underway for the Kitty Hawk Flyer, which is being called a "flying auto". Kitty Hawk says the Flyer is "easy to fly" but recommends professional training.

Kitty Hawk explains that the Flyer is considered an Ultralight by the Federal Aviation Administration, so you don't need a pilot's license to operate one. The price for a Flyer is yet to be announced, but potential customers can apply for an invitation to purchase one, according to Digital Trends.

Page funded the Kitty Hawk Flyer model, which he calls "an exciting first step to sharing the freedom of flight". He hopes the cars will one day be able to reach a speed of 100 miles per hour.

Weighing just 250lb, the auto is operated by two control sticks - one controlling the altitude and one controlling its direction. "You definitely feel the vibrations".

The Flyer is powered by lithium polymer batteries and provides a fully stabilised flight experience by utilising data from multiple smart sensors to make flying intuitive and easy, says the official website. The firm also plans to invite business partners and social influencers to fly the machine which should help the public, and lawmakers, become aware that these vehicles exist and what their capabilities are. After a first successful test flight of a flying auto being accomplished recently, we can perhaps soon do what we would right now kill for - fly over traffic.

"The No. 1 most important thing other than safety for us is societal acceptance", he told CNN.

Kitty Hawk has not yet set a release date for its Flyer, but it has already set up a training facility on Lake Las Vegas to give people a taste of flying its baby. "Will people be willing to fly on these devices, be willing to live next to these devices like this?"
