France's Emmanuel Macron Throws Down Trump Twitter Gauntlet: G7 Can Be G6

Theresa May slams Trump for imposing tariffs on allies

Indeed, on Thursday, French President Emmanuel Macron suggested in a tweet that Trump might not sign the final summit statement on G-7 priorities.

Top U.S. allies are set for a showdown with Washington at this week's G7 summit in Canada as the Trump administration shows no sign of backing down from protectionist policies that have upset trading partners and unnerved investors.

Asked by reporters whether the problem with Trump was that he "didn't care about being isolated", Macron said: "You say the U.S. President doesn't care at all".

Macron was biting in his criticism of Trump, saying that the other six leading industrialized countries at the summit could get along there without the U.S.

Trump doubled down with another message singling out the Canadian leader Thursday.

On the eve of the G-7 summit in Canada, the USA president lashed out at host Justin Trudeau and the White House announced Donald Trump would skip some of the sessions. "Look forward to seeing them tomorrow", Trump wrote.

The French president expressed support for Trump in his expected summit with the North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un, but also warned his abrogation last month of a 2015 multilateral deal on the Iranian nuclear programme had cast doubt on the credibility of such agreements.

Mr Trudeau has described the USA claim that the tariff decision was taken on national security grounds as "insulting".

White House National Economic Council Director Larry Kudlow holds a news briefing about the upcoming G7 meetings in the Brady Press Briefing Room at the White House June 6, 2018 in Washington, DC. "Being open to technologies of the future doesn't mean we have to accept all their uses", he said.

But Trump is deadly serious about reforming a global trade system he believes is fundamentally broken, Kudlow said.

Trump took to Twitter later in the evening to blast Trudeau on a range of issue tied to the ongoing trade differences between the two countries, including Trump's imposition of punishing steel and aluminum tariffs and the unresolved North American Free Trade Agreement talks.

Macron made clear Thursday that the other six countries wouldn't hesitate to go it alone. European allies have urged Trump to reconsider the move. Trump may have less to fear than slow-growing Europe and Japan from a trade war in terms of economic losses if the "G6" pushes back on tariffs.

Mr. Trump's "America first" mantra has led to policy decisions that have angered USA allies.

Canada also announced retaliatory tariffs on $12.8 billion (£9.5 billion) worth of United States goods, including steel and aluminum products, mayonnaise, and sleeping bags.

And White House officials are discussing ways to ramp up the penalties on Canada over Ottawas threat to levy tariffs next month on C$16.6 billion ($12.86 billion) in US -made products, the Washington Post reported, citing unnamed officials.
