House GOP Immigration Bill Would End Family Separation At Border

House Speaker Paul Ryan, although he said he does not agree with separation of immigrant families at the border bla

Only the compromise bill would open a door to citizenship for "Dreamers", the young immigrants who were brought to the USA illegally as children, and reduce the separation of children from their parents when families are detained crossing the border - a practice that has drawn bipartisan condemnation in recent days.

"The House moderates will lose all credibility if they accept this sham of a bill, which is extreme and drastically cuts immigration in ways unacceptable to the Senate and the American people", Schumer said in a statement on Monday. Trump called for Congress to approve the so-called third option on Tuesday. "I think this is the best chance at law that we have".

House Republicans released an immigration proposal Thursday evening, pitched as a "compromise" between hardliners and moderates - but in reality, the bill makes sweeping changes to the immigration system.

Under the current policy, all unlawful crossings are referred for prosecution - a process that moves adults to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service and sends many children to facilities run by the Department of Health and Human Services.

The editorial board criticized "Team Trump" for their decision to prosecute illegal border-crossers "rather than simply deporting them". Under U.S. protocol, if parents are jailed, their children are separated from them because the children aren't charged with a crime.

Approaching controversial, comprehensive legislation is generally considered extremely hard, or undesirable, in an election year, and Republicans are vulnerable in the House this November. "And the administration needs to put an end to that right off".

Increased judicial capacity is the cornerstone of several of the plans circulating among Republicans.

Even before the president's remarks, the bill's passage seemed highly uncertain.

Ted Cruz of Texas introduced legislation that the White House said it was reviewing, and Rep. Mark Meadows of North Carolina, a leader of the conservative Freedom Caucus, also introduced a measure. "The legal authority to detain and properly remove families together as a unit". He introduced his own bill to speed up court proceedings to no more than 14 days. John Cornyn, the No. 2 Republican in the Senate, is re-introducing his 2014 proposal created to keep families together, but speed up court dates and the deportation process for minors. Ryan put down a rebellion in his own caucus and headed off a clean DACA authorization that nearly succeeded in coming to the floor via a discharge petition, promising to allow both groups to craft their own bills for floor votes.

"President Trump has to say my priority is the wall and then work with us on getting a bill that gets his wall and other things", Ros-Lehtinen said.

From afar, ailing Sen.

The national debate over the family separation policy comes as Republican lawmakers are growing ever more concerned about negative effects on their re-election campaigns this fall. They've objected fiercely to the zero tolerance policy that his administration instituted. "It should do so now".

The White House said he still backs both.

He also blamed Democrats for the separation of illegal immigrant families at the border, arguing the left has had the power to close the loop holes in immigration policies but has done nothing.

President Donald Trump ended Republicans' hopes of putting an immigration bill on his desk, dismissing the House GOP compromise bill as too moderate and something he would "certainly" not sign into law.

House Republicans were eyeing floor votes on both, starting with the more enforcement-heavy measure that has been pushed by House Judiciary Chairman Robert Goodlatte, R-Va., possibly as soon as late next week with votes on the compromise version to come later.

In the uproar over family separations, Republicans have also been crafting what they see as a legislative approach that would keep families together in detention, a provision that they've added to both bills.

The release of the draft bill Thursday was GOP leadership's effort to bridge the divide between those two camps.

Faced with the prospect of gridlock in the House, senators appear willing to take matters into their own hands. Ryan said Thursday he's not comfortable with a Trump administration policy that separates children from their parents at the southern border and said Congress should step in to fix the problem.
