House Vote On Immigration Bill Delayed Until Next Week

Rep. Steve Russell R-Okla. left and Rep. Mike Gallagher R-Wis. walk to a closed-door meeting with House Republicans seeking more information about compromise legislation on immigration at the Capitol in Washington Thursday

Relenting to pressure from lawmakers of both parties, as well as his wife and daughter, Ivanka, Trump signed an executive order Wednesday to stop separating families.

"Elect more Republicans in November and we will pass the finest, fairest and most comprehensive Immigration Bills anywhere in the world".

President Trump stood alongside "angel families" who have been affected by crimes committed by undocumented immigrants Friday, as he continues his push for strong borders.

"Republicans should stop wasting their time on Immigration until after we elect more Senators and Congressmen/women in November", he tweeted. Asked if the House will take up a vote on the compromise bill Friday, Scalise said, "right now we're going to keep working with our members".

The legislation was already on life support, with party leaders deciding on Thursday to postpone a vote to the following day as they struggled to garner enough support for the measure, reports The Hill magazine.

After weeks of negotiating to set up vote on a pair of immigration reform measures, House Speaker Paul Ryan saw the first bill defeated, in part with opposition from his own party members, before pulling the second.

He focused on the fact that young migrants separated from parents are likely to be reunited, unlike the victims of murders.

Republicans and Democrats in Congress have been unable to work together to resolve any of the issues with a legislative fix. Reportedly, the vote has been moved back until tomorrow (Friday) while Ryan, assisted by Trump, tries to round up more support.

The fact that votes on immigration bills are happening at all is because of an effort by moderate Republicans who grew exhausted of their party's failure to act on immigration.

Both bills have received backing from Mr Trump but are opposed by Democrats and immigration advocacy groups.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders says Democrats and the news media exploited for political purposes a widely circulated photograph of a 2-year-old Honduran girl as her mother is searched near the U.S. -Mexico border.

One public law office in Texas has said state prosecutors would be dismissing cases in which parents were charged with illegally entering the country and separated from their children, while in the border city of McAllen, 17 immigrants have been unexpectedly let off without any charges. Just Tuesday, he met privately with GOP lawmakers and told them he supported the immigration legislation and would have their backs in November.

Merida-Galicia, who is being held in California, is just one of many incarcerated immigrant mothers whose attorneys tell similar stories about chaotic situations in which the mothers don't know where their children have been taken or how to contact them. Bob Goodlatte, R-Va. The other bill, the "compromise" or "moderate" bill, comes from Republican leadership.

The president reassured them that would not happen, they said.

Lieu tweeted before his House appearance that he would be speaking about "the 2300 babies and kids ripped away from their parents" as a result of Trump administration policies.

So, unless the White House backs off its "zero tolerance" policy (which it definitely won't), or the courts reverse themselves (which they nearly definitely won't), or Congress takes action, family separation will become US policy again.

The president said Friday that even if a measure passes, it's doomed in the Senate.

The Mendez family has been waiting two weeks for USA officials to let them formally request asylum - a long wait that is pushing many to cross the border illegally, according to activists.
