Incredibles 2 smashes animated-movie opening weekend record

The movie, which had the best opening weekend of an animated film ever, has scenes with flashing lights. But even by the impressive standards elsewhere in the studio's catalogue, the record-smashing opening weekend for its latest movie, Incredibles 2, is an incredible result.

This figure marks the biggest debut for an animated film in United States cinema history, even when adjusted for inflation (via Vulture), beating previous record-holder "Finding Dory", which scooped $135 million (£102 million) when it debuted two years ago.

That record belonged to another Pixar film, "Finding Dory", which opened to roughly $135 million two summers ago.

The Incredibles 2 is officially a box office superhero.

"Incredibles 2" comes 14 years after "The Incredibles", which at the time boasted one of the biggest animated openings ever, and picks up right where the first film left off with the superhero family.

The move premiered Friday (June 15) and has grossed over $180 million in the US and Canada, a new record for an animated feature opening. Directed by Brad Bird, the films features the voices of Holly Hunter, Craig T. Nelson, Isabella Rossellini, Jonathan Banks, Catherine Keener, John Ratzenberger. Disney, however, is being a bit more cautious and estimating Incredibles 2 will earn around $160-170 million.

So far the film brought in $231.5 million around the world.

Sony's "Superfly" remake has earned $5.865 million from 2,220 North American locations since its Wednesday premiere, including $1.87 million on Friday. Directed by Gary Ross and starring Sandra Bullock among others, "Ocean's 8" follows a group of women, led by Debbie Ocean, who plan on robbing the Met Gala in NY.
