It shows the growing severity of the issue

From 2014 through 2016, Oklahoma's per capita average was 23.5 suicides per 100,000 people, up from 17.0 from 1999 through 2001.

Trends in suicides in many ways follow trends in mental health, yet more than half of suicide victims in 2016 had no known mental illness diagnosis at the time of their deaths. For half of the states, the increase exceeded 30 percent.

From 1999 to 2016, rates increased in almost all states, ranging from a 6-percent increase in DE to a 57-percent increase in North Dakota. Montana, Idaho, the Dakotas, and Wyoming all saw increases between 38 and 58 percent.

The findings were published in the CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

Pulling data from the National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS) that observed contributing circumstances to suicide in decedents with and without known mental health conditions in 27 states in 2015, researchers reported that 54% did not have a known mental health condition. "We call it a care plan, and it's a way for people to stay safe when they feel suicidal urges come out", said Scott Langernecker, Illinois chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

"None of this is surprising information, which is not to trivialize its importance".

In a study of these laws in two states, in and CT, researchers at the University of Indianapolis found that the legislation led to reductions in gun-related suicides, compared with the expected numbers: they were 7.5 per cent lower in IN in the decade after enactment, and 13.7 per cent lower in CT in the year since strict enforcement began.

That means any public health effort to reduce suicides can't exclusively focus on those who have reached out for help.

The report said people without known mental health problems were more likely to die by firearms than those with known mental health problems.

"New Hampshire definitely has access to guns", Tilley said.

"Suicide rates have increased by 30%", said Warden.

As of this week, millionaire handbag mogul Kate Spade became another member of that age group to die by suicide. "We are concerned with all aspects of suicide prevention, including access to lethal means, and so we do include that in a comprehensive approach to suicide prevention". It's important to talk about this issue, and end the stigma.

"American suicide is predominantly a firearm issue". "We don't think we can just leave this to the mental health system to manage". "The conversation about firearms and suicide doesn't have to be a debate about the Second Amendment". "Suicide is a public health crisis when you look at the numbers, and they keep going up".

This is part of its larger call on entire communities - beginning at the family level and expanding all the way up to society as a whole - to come together to watch out for suicidal behavior and make help more accessible. "And there's good research to support that".

"Many of us have been personally impacted by this unfortunate reality", said Greg Lakin, the chief medical officer of the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. "It's also about other methods of suicide, such as hanging, suffocation, poisoning, and the like". "There are some for youth, but they're very, very tiny", says Gebbia. "We can't expect a major public health problem like this to be addressed unless we see the investment".
