North Korea delegation takes letter to US President Donald Trump

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and a top North Korean official are set to continue talks in NY on Thursday to try to salvage next month's nuclear summit, as Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov flew into Pyongyang for discussions with Kim Jong Un.

The meeting between President Trump and Kim Jong-un is re-scheduled for June 12 after it was briefly canceled due to hostility from the North Koreans in May. "Maybe, you'll need to see it and maybe fairly soon", said Trump.

North Korea's flurry of diplomatic activity following an increase in nuclear weapons and missile tests in 2017 suggests that Mr Kim is eager for sanctions relief to build his economy and for the global legitimacy a summit with Mr Trump would provide. Leaving the reporters, Trump noted that he hadn't yet read the letter, though he'd said minutes earlier that it was very "interesting".

Friday's announcement came after a top North Korean official arrived at the White House to deliver a letter to the president.

The summit between the two leaders will be held on 12 June in Singapore. The meeting was expected to be much shorter.

"But we're going to be..." "Therefore, please let this letter serve to represent that the Singapore summit, for the good of both parties, but to the detriment of the world, will not take place".

"I'm still convinced that if he's in this process, even if the summit is ongoing and we're moving out, if this thing isn't heading towards the obvious objective he'll pull out". In one account, a former chef detailed how Kim "gorged on steak, cheese and two bottles of Cristal champagne in one sitting".

An aide confirmed Trump did read the letter after he spoke to reporters and then left nearly immediately for Camp David where he will prepare for the summit. -North Korea summit, which President Donald Trump reinstated the previous day.

The State Department chief has also established contacts before with North Korea and has made two trips to the repressive regime of Kim Jong Un.
