Porsche Taycan is the name for the production Mission E

Porsche announced the name for its first purely electric model as part of the "70 years of Porsche Sports Cars" ceremony celebrating 70 years since the first 356.

The name, which is derived from Turkish, according to Porsche, and translates as "lively young horse", is a reference to the prancing steed at the center of Porsche's shield-shaped logo. But the powertrain has been confirmed: Two permanently activated synchronous motors generating more than 600 horsepower combined.

Make that gallop. The Taycan's pair of electric motors will output "over 600 hp" and launch the auto to 200 km/h in under 12 seconds. "Multiple jump starts are possible in succession without loss of performance", Porsche says. The Model S can do its Ludicrous Mode party trick a few times before needing to cool down, but Porsche has said its Taycan will be able to maintain its performance both in sprints and for track days without issue.

In terms of range, the target is for the Porsche Taycan cover upwards of 300 miles on a single charge and Porsche says the 800-volt system can take on 62 miles of charge in just 4 minutes - assuming you have access to the necessary high powered charging facilities.

Second, driven in all-electric mode, the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid shows that Porsche has managed to retain its race-bred chops in an EV, largely down to a compliant but communicative adaptive suspension and an impeccably weighted steering feel.

The Taycan is expected to go on sale late next year.

Porsche both needs electrification to comply with tougher emissions rules and is embracing the technology because it allows for sporty driving that dovetails with the brand, he said. Over $580 million will be allocated to the production of the Taycan and other vehicles based on it, including a crossover previously known as Mission E Cross Turismo.

Giving a vehicle both electric and gas engines is like building an athlete that can sprint like a 100-meter champ and then pull away like a miler. The existing engine plant is being expanded to manufacture electric motors, and a new body shop will also be developed.
