'Roseanne' cancelled: ABC axes comedy after comedian's tweet

Barr blames sleep aid Ambien for racist tweet

They say ABC's issue is that the characters in Roseanne were created by Barr and Matt Williams, and if the sitcom carried on without her she would still rake it in.

Barr engaged in a series of tweets Tuesday night, hours after ABC announced it was cancelling the rebooted "Roseanne" over a racist tweet by the comedian attacking Valerie Jarrett, an adviser to former President Barack Obama.

"While all pharmaceutical treatments have side effects, racism is not a known side effect of any Sanofi medication". "It was 2 in the morning and I was ambien tweeting".

Sara Gilbert, the actor who played Barr's daughter Darlene on the once-beloved series, tweeted her disappointment with the abrupt cancellation, but also said she understood the decision.

Barr has since given the excuse she had written the tweet on the sleeping drug Ambien. Barr tweeted: "muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby=vj".

"I was not surprised that what went down and that the show was cancelled", he said on Wednesday's Anderson Cooper 360.

"I begged Ben Sherwood at ABC to let me apologize and make amends".

After seeing her earlier tweets, Tom told Anderson that he was surprise ABC had not done anything prior.

The ad goes on to state that users should use Ambien if "you've ever asked when will there be a White History Month", used the phrase "I'm not racist, but ..." and "if you've previously tweeted racist things that your boss forgot about".

What Roseanne Barr did is pretty unique in television history and ABC was completely right to fire her.

She then said she was leaving Twitter, but it was unclear if she meant for the day or permanently.

"I don't know anything about it", he said.

Roseanne's ex also talked to the Hollywood Reporter inferring that Roseanne wanted the cancellation of the show to happen.

Barr returned to Twitter on Wednesday to reject accusations she is racist and is considering fighting back. But much of its progress would have been threatened if it looked the other way at Barr's tweet.

Ms Jarrett, 61, was a top aide for President Obama and also served as assistant to the president for public engagement and chair of the White House council on women and girls, as well as heading up his transition team when he moved into the White House.

Roseanne, which first aired in 1988, made a hugely successful comeback earlier this year - becoming one of the most watched sitcoms on American TV after more than two decades off the air.
