Singapore Police Tighten Security Ahead of Trump-Kim Summit

A heavily-guarded motorcade, believed to be Kim's, was filmed traveling from Changi to St. Regis Hotel, a 5-star property located in downtown Singapore.

Kim Jong Un has landed in Singapore, two days before his historic tête-à-tête with President Donald Trump.

Kim, in his first public comments since arriving, said Singapore's role would be recorded in history if the summit was a success.

For Kim, almost 40 years Trump's junior and representing the third generation of North Korea's ruling dynasty, the summit affords both him and his long-isolated country the global legitimacy his father and grandfather could only dream of.

Though he left that summit on a sour note, Trump is looking forward to the Singapore summit with North Korea, believing that "this one-time opportunity will not be wasted".

North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un walks with Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong at the Istana in Singapore June 10, 2018.

"North Korea stands to be plugged into the rest of the world".

The North, many experts believe, stands on the brink of being able to target the entire USA mainland with its nuclear-armed missiles, and while there's deep skepticism that Kim will quickly give up those hard-won nukes, there's also some hope that diplomacy can replace the animosity between the US and the North.

Any nuclear deal will hinge on North Korea's willingness to allow unfettered outside inspections of the country's warheads and nuclear fuel, much of which is likely kept in a vast complex of underground facilities.

But since taking power in 2011 on his father's death, the youthful Kim has displayed a mixture of ruthlessness, pragmatism and statecraft to get this prize - to sit across the table with the leader of the United States and be treated as an equal.

"In the last few years, it's been building nuclear weapons".

Kim Yong Chol, who has taken the lead in planning for the summit, including meetings in NY with Pompeo and at the White House with Trump, was among those in Kim's arrival party.

Kim's journey from global pariah to being regarded as a responsible head of state has taken just a few months.

In his New Year message, Kim extended an olive branch to enemy South Korea, sent a team to the Winter Olympics there in February, and held two summits with South Korean President Moon Jae-in in April and May. For Trump, a successful summit will see him achieve badly needed kudos on the global stage ahead of congressional elections in November. Trump, flying aboard Air Force One, will reportedly arrive in Singapore on Sunday night local time.
