Swiss coach unimpressed with celebrations in win over Serbia

Shaqiri scored a last-gasp victor against Serbia.

Xhaka curled the ball through traffic to tie the game at 1-1, and Ivanovic suddenly became a very unpopular man on social media.

Switzerland wasted little time in finding their equaliser after the break with Granit Xhaka pouncing on a blocked Shaqiri shot and firing an unstoppable blast from outside the box past a helpless Stojkovic on 52 minutes.

Switzerland's Xherdan Shaqiri scores their second goal against Serbia in the FIFA World Cup's Group E match in Kaliningrad Stadium, Kaliningrad, Russia, June 22, 2018.

Shaqiri and Xhaka both celebrating the victor with the Albanian eagle in front of the Serbian fans.

"In football you have always emotions and you can see what I did and it's just emotion", he said in reference to his controversial celebration. You can see what I did, and it's just emotion, and I'm just happy to have scored the goal. Xhaka and Shaqiri both have Albanian-Kosovan roots and there are bitter feelings that remain in the region between Serbs and Kosovans following the bloody Kosovo war that ended in 1999.

"If there are such Albanian patriots, why don't they play for that country?"

"It's clear that emotions were displayed up and I think we all need to steer away from politics and focus on this sport as a handsome game that brings people together", Switzerland coach Vladimir Petkovic told reporters.

Valon Behrami formed another luxurious axis in the heart of Switzerland's midfield, building on the sensational performance he put in against Brazil on Sunday, as he anchored the middle of the park judiciously, bringing composure and assurance to the midfield.

"I hope that people will take notice of us and take us seriously".

"You should never mix politics and football, it's good to be a fan and important to show respect", he told reporters after the game.

The Stoke City player - who has been linked with a move to Liverpool - paid tribute to his teammates for turning the match around, a feat he suggested the Switzerland squad of years gone by would not have achieved. It's a wonderful atmosphere and positive emotions and that's what football should be about.

The hand gesture the players made after scoring is known as the duart e kryqezuara, or crossed hands.

A 1-0 win over Costa Rica and Brazil's surprise 1-1 draw with Switzerland has left Serbia on the cusp of advancing from Group E in Russian Federation. Politicians in Switzerland and Serbia had their say, too, in the matter. Serbia will face Brazil in Moscow at the same time.
