Tennis player collides with ballboy at French Open

Alexander Zverev

But Zverev edged a tense fourth set in which he was issued a code violation for being coached from the stands by his father Alexander Sr.

The 31-year-old former world number one struggled at times on Suzanne Lenglen court, but eventually came through the four-set battle in three hours and 48 minutes.

"I think psychologically that is a big, big breakthrough for Zverev today".

The 2018 French Open quarter-finals began to take shape on Sunday as Alexander Zverev beat Karen Khachanov to progress past the fourth round and will face Dominic Thiem in the next phase of the competition. "I'm very happy about being in the quarterfinals here going the hard way, going the long distance. showing everybody that I can play for as long as I need to".

Dzumhur, seeded 26th, had a match point on Zverev's serve at 5-4 in the final set. "This definitely paid off, the hours in the gym every day".

Three-time champion Williams is playing her first Grand Slam tournament since taking time off last year due to pregnancy, while Sharapova is at Roland Garros for the first time in three years after serving a doping ban in 2016 and being refused a wildcard 12 months ago.

It is the first time Zverev has reached the last eight of a Grand Slam.

He's also somehow only made the fourth round once before, at Wimbledon a year ago.

On his third set point, the erratic Zverev found the net again with a sloppy backhand.

The second-set tiebreaker was scrappy, Zverev clinching it with an ace to level the match.

It did not seem to impede him, however. Keys held steady, though, and was able to convert her second match point when Osaka double-faulted.

The Americans had a fruitful day in the women's singles, meanwhile, as both Sloane Stephens and Madison Keys took their places in the quarter-finals following wins over Anett Kontaveit and Mihaela Buzarnescu, respectively. But Dzumhur felt it was within his reach and also ran out to catch it.

Stephens, the 10th seed, had previously made the fourth round for four successive seasons and will next play either Australian Open champion and second seed Caroline Wozniacki or Russia's Daria Kasatkina.
