Texas Border Patrol Chase Ends in Crash, 5 Immigrants Killed

Good police work’? High-speed chase after illegal immigrants leaves 5 dead in Texas

At least five people died and several others were injured Sunday after an SUV packed with a dozen undocumented immigrants flipped on a South Texas highway while fleeing Border Patrol agents.

"The Border Patrol was pursuing a vehicle and one of my deputies assisted in the pursuit, and took over the pursuit just west of Big Wells", Mr. Boyd told KSAT-12.

In Texas' Rio Grande Valley, the busiest corridor for people trying to enter the U.S., Border Patrol officials argue that they have to crack down on migrants and separate adults from children as a deterrent to others.

One of the four taken to the San Antonio hospital later died, the department said.

Prosecutors said Tuesday that almost two dozen people believed to be in the country illegally were involved in the smuggling scheme. It may turn out that they were, but for now all we know is that authorities believed they were illegal immigrants.

In Sunday's crash, Boyd said the driver of the SUV survived and was taken into custody.

The incident started after a Border Patrol agent in Carrizo Springs suspected smuggling when he saw a trio of vehicles pass him on a rural highway, US Customs and Border Protection said.

Authorities believe the driver and one passenger were US citizens trying to smuggle immigrants into the country, Boyd said.

The federal criminal complaint doesn't distinguish between the driver and the other four people named in the complaint.

Newly released footage offers a glimpse inside a US Border Patrol detention center in Texas, where more than 1,100 people - including kids - are being held inside chain-link-fenced cages. People from both vehicles were arrested, according to the statement.

He added: "This is a ideal example of why our borders need to be secure".

If you've been paying any attention to the news in recent days, you've no doubt heard something about the roiling controversy surrounding the Trump administration's awful immigration policies and the frightening impact it's been having on the families it's been destroying. An agent tried to pull over the third vehicle, but the driver refused to stop, according to the statement.

The border agent stopped one of the vehicles and another agent stopped a second one. "It is a major problem". "My mummy says that I'll go with my aunt. and that she'll come to pick me up there as quickly as possible".

"I think it's devastating", he says.
