Trump makes offer to kneeling players: Don't protest, bring me pardon candidates

POTUS wants their recommendations of people who were treated unfairly by the system and deserves a pardon.

Before saying he'd listen to suggestions for folks to be pardoned, Trump again said those players weren't "proud enough" to stand for the anthem. "And I'm going to ask them to recommend to me people who were unfairly treated, friend of theirs or people that they know about, and I'm gonna look at those applications". The goal will be to prove that statements about anthem protests from Trump and his camp directly influenced Kaepernick's standing with the league.

Many questioned the President's reasoning that National Football League players were kneeling because they objected to the flag and what it stood for.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said during his deposition that Trump had told him: "This is a very winning, strong issue for me".

The NFL now requires players to stand on the field during the national anthem or take up the option of staying in the locker room.

But civil rights activists were skeptical of Trump's gesture, given his repeated use of a controversy around the national anthem at NFL games to stoke the country's culture wars, and his fraught relationship with the African-American community.

If Kaepernick's legal team is successful in their arguments before the system arbitrator, they could also depose Trump associates that are familiar with his behavior affecting the case.

However, no Eagles players kneeled during the anthem last season, a fact former Eagles wide receiver Torrey Smith pointed out on Twitter, calling Trump's decision to cancel the Eagles' visit "a cowardly act".

Trump, speaking Friday in front of reports ahead of the G7 summit, offered somewhat of a deal to the players who continue to protest.

Last month Trump posthumously pardoned heavyweight boxing champion Jack Johnson, whose legacy was soiled by a racially tainted criminal conviction, after actor Sylvester Stallone championed the case. That's what we tried to think through.
