Trump upbeat about meeting with Kim

A few hours earlier, Trudeau had told reporters that all seven leaders had come together to sign a joint declaration.

In May, Trump hit Canada, Mexico and the European Union with steel and aluminum tariffs as part of an effort to create "FAIR TRADE" agreements with America's partners.

Earlier in the evening, Trump tweeted that Canadian prime minster Justin Trudeau was "meek" and "mild" and that his statements were "false".

He was reacting to Trudeau's declaration that Canadians would "not be pushed around" and would hit back at punishing USA tariffs on metal imports with "equivalent tariffs".

Last week, Trump lifted exemptions from tariffs on steel and aluminum imported to the U.S. from Canada and other allies who failed to negotiate a side agreement, as Australia did. The noise of Mr Trump's helicopter landing was so loud they had to stop talking for a while, in a scene one official compared to the opening from the USA television series M.A.S.H. Others said "make what you will" of the forcible handshake.

European officials suggested that the upbeat, punchy news conference that Trump delivered before skipping out was aimed at his trade-skeptic supporters back home and did not reflect the results of the summit.

In his press conference, Trudeau had spoken of retaliatory measures that Canada would take next month in response to Trump's decision to slap tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Canada, Mexico and the European Union.

President Trump said he expects something will happen on trade, and that it will be positive.

Meanwhile, Trump is moving ahead with an upcoming summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and called on Friday for the G-7 to readmit Russian Federation, which was expelled in 2014 for forcibly annexing part of Ukraine.

Trade dominated the two-day summit that began on Friday with leaders of Germany, France, Japan, Canada, Britain and Italy returning to the topic repeatedly in meetings, at a lavish dinner and by a fireside pit late into the evening.

During the meeting with leaders Trump also aired grievances about trade, using charts to discuss the US's trade deficit with various G7 members.

Trump's latest verbal counter-punch came in response to comments made by Trudeau at the press conference, in which he threatened to torpedo negotiations on a new NAFTA deal if the United States did not remove the steel and aluminum tariffs.

This meant there were some pretty big characters in that room - German Chancellor Angela Merkel, British PM Theresa May, Canadian PM Justin Trudeau, French President Emmanuel Macron, as well as Europe chiefs Donald Tusk and Jean-Claude Juncker. Earlier this week, Merkel said the group is defined by its members' respect of worldwide law, and Russia's 2014 annexation of Crimea was a "flagrant breach" of that.

There was also an agreement to disagree on climate change in the wake of Trump's decision to leave the Paris climate accord a year ago which further underlined the divide between the Group of Seven's powerhouse and its six co-members.

"I don't blame other leaders for that".
