United Kingdom police investigating cause of "minor explosion" at underground station in London

Reports of a minor explosion inside Southgate Tube Station

The Metropolitan Police said in a statement: "Police were called at 7.03pm on 19 June to reports of an explosion and people running at Southgate underground station".

A "minor explosion" has been reported at a London undergound station this evening.

London mayor Sadiq Khan tweeted that he as in touch with Scotland Yard and urged people to stay away from the area.

Emergency services are at the scene as officers deal with a "suspicious package". "No serious injuries reported and enquiries continue", confirmed British Transport Police.

There have also been reports of a suspicious package at the station.

A small number of people have been treated at the scene.

Police say no cause has yet been established.

"I was at Southgate Station when this commotion started".

Darren Yarlett, 36, was driving home in Southgate but police had cordoned off roads near the station.

"Officers remain at #Southgate tube station".

"Officers are on scene alongside @metpoliceuk".

London police are investigating a small explosion at a London Underground station this morning (NZ time). "The Met Police and [British Transport Police] are working together to establish the full facts".
