Vermont paying $10,000 to move there and work from home

According to state officials and the official summary of the new legislation, the financial incentive is meant to help cover a worker's moving costs and business expenses related to working remotely, such as for new technology.

"This looks like an opportunity for us to bring people into the state who might not otherwise be here", Lyons, a Democrat, told the Globe on Friday.

"The intent is to spread it to as many people", said Joan Goldstein, commissioner for the Department of Economic Development.

Vermont is willing to pay new residents who work remotely for an out-of-state employer in hopes of increasing its population and workforce. In March, Governor Scott and the Vermont Department of Tourism and Marketing announced the so-called Stay-to-Stay initiative, which is meant to help tourists relocate to the state. The state has only budgeted for 100 grants to be given out over the next three years, on a first-come, first-serve basis beginning on January 1, 2019, and Goldstein says her office is already receiving inquiries.

In total, $125,000 in grants are available for 2019, $250,000 for 2020, and $125,000 for 2021.

The US labor market has been thriving recently, making it hard to retain workers.

Companies have been getting more generous and creative to compete for talent. Workers will receive $5,000 per year after submitting reimbursement forms that prove they used the money for moving costs. Some have been increasing pay and changing payroll practices, while others are beefing up benefits, like offering help paying down student loan debts and flexible schedules.

Tourists who plan their trips to the state during one of the designated weekends from April to October have the opportunity to network with employers, entrepreneurs, and realtors. "The whole idea of getting more people is because we need to broaden the tax base ... but if you are moving from NY, taxes are less here".
