World Cup Group H match report Poland v Colombia 24 June 2018

Colombia brushed aside Poland 3-0 in Kazan on Sunday to boost their hopes of reaching the World Cup knockout stage as captain Radamel Falcao starred with a goal and an assist.

Radamel Falcao got his first World Cup goal in the 70th minute to double the lead for Colombia after pouncing on a through ball from Quintero, who was one of Colombia's best player throughout the game.

In an echo of the murder of Colombian defender Andres Escobar in the wake of his own goal at the 1994 World Cup, police in the South American country are investigating death threats made against Sanchez.

The two teams are in Group H along with Japan and Senegal, and both have ground to make up after suffering 2-1 losses in their openers.

Colombia, who reached the quarter-finals for the first time in Brazil four years ago before bowing out to the hosts, are in a similar situation after a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Japan - they were forced to play with 10 men for nearly the entire game.

Sanchez was suspended for the game at Kazan Arena as Colombia got back in contention for a place in the last 16 and Poland were eliminated, and has had "a very hard time" dealing with the fallout from his third-minute sending-off in the 2-1 defeat to Japan, Pekerman said.

The Colombian forward is a fraction of the player he was four years ago when injury stopped him from joining the party in Brazil.

With two losses after two games, Poland has zero points.

"Many things did not go as they should today, during this World Cup".

Cuadrado teased and frustrated the Polish defence in a positive start to the second half, and after Colombia 'keeper David Ospina bravely denied Robert Lewandowski when he latched on to a risky long ball, Colombia turned up the heat. The lively Quintero threaded a defence-splitting pass to Falcao, who rolled back the years with a delightful low finish with the outside of his right boot.

Colombia is still alive ahead of its final match against Senegal and can still win the group, while Poland can only hurt Japan's chances of advancement.

Mina's goal came late in the first half off a ideal cross from James Rodriguez.

Poland started the second half a much better side and nearly levelled matters on the hour mark when Robert Lewandowski showed great skill inside the box to bring a lofted cross under control before seeing his shot from 14 yards well-stopped by the Colombian keeper.

Colombia slowed the pace in the second half, showing good counterattacking qualities.

Poland played well for 15 minutes but then faded.
