Zimbabwe: Attempts on Mnangagwa's life

Zimbabwe's president Mnangagwa survives assassination attempt at rally in Harare

Mnangagwa said last August, then the vice president, that he had been poisoned at a rally outside Bulawayo and spent weeks receiving medical treatment in neighbouring South Africa.

Forty-one people were injured in the blast at a rally in the city of Bulawayo, which occurred close to Mr Mnangagwa as he was leaving the stage.

He was not hurt, his spokesman said.

The July 30 election will be the first without Mugabe in the southern African nation since independence in 1980. Mnangagwa, who has joked openly about multiple attempts on his life in the past, said he was used to them by now.

The state-owned Herald newspaper also said that the second Vice President Kembo Mohadi and the Environment Minister were also injured in the blast. "We will leave no stone unturned and we urge members of the public to come forth and assist us in our investigations", he said.

Mnangagwa reportedly survived an attempt on his life a year ago when he ate poisoned food at a rally at Phelandaba Stadium in Gwanda, a small town about 550km southwest of the capital.

"Let me make it very clear that nothing will stop the elections in Zimbabwe, nothing at all", Vice President Constantino Chiwenga, who was lightly bruised in Saturday's blast, told a rally outside the capital, Harare.

At least 49 people, including both of Zimbabwe's vice presidents, were injured in the explosion that Mnangagwa said occurred just "inches" from him.

Past votes have been marked by allegations of violence and fraud, and the United States and others have said a credible vote is key to lifting worldwide sanctions. He was later seen in pictures circulating on social media visiting Chiwenga's wife in hospital.

State media called the attack an assassination attempt.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has offered a substantial reward following the explosion which occured at Bulawayo's White City Stadium on Saturday.

The vote is the first since Robert Mugabe was ousted and Mr Mnangagwa has vowed they will be peaceful.

The ministry expressed the UAE's solidarity with Zimbabwe against all forms of violence.
