IDF strikes three military targets in Syrian Golan heights

Israel will not ‘rule out’ ties with Syrian govt – Defence minister

Earlier on Wednesday, Israel fired a Patriot missile to intercept what initial findings showed was an unarmed drone that may have been on an intelligence mission, the Israeli army said.

Israeli Patriot missiles shot down a Syrian drone that infiltrated 10 kilometers into Israel's air space.

Mr Putin and Mr Netanyahu had reportedly reached an agreement for Russian Federation to hold back Iranian-backed groups from the border before the Syrian regime began its offensive against rebels there last month.

Israel says it has treated between 4,000 and 4,500 war casualties from Syria since a humanitarian aid programme was begun some five years ago.

"The IDF will not allow any violation of Israeli airspace and will act against any attempt to hurt its civilians", the IDF added. The plateau is not recognised internationally as Israeli territory.

That position is shared by most United States lawmakers from both sides of the aisle, many of whom are now concerned that when President Donald Trump meets with Putin early next week, he might make some kind of deal that leaves Syria in the hands of the Russians, and their Iranian allies.

"The aircraft of the Israeli enemy fired several missiles in the direction of some army positions", Syrian state media cited the military source as saying on Wednesday.

The anonymous Israeli official said Russian Federation was working to distance Iranian forces from the Golan and had proposed that they be kept 80 kilometres away but that this fell short of Israel's demand for their full exit along with that of Iranian-sponsored militias. Israel worries Assad could let his Iranian allies entrench there or that Syrian forces may defy a 1974 Golan demilitarisation.

The IDF soon confirmed targeting sites in Syria, claiming it was their response to a drone infiltration earlier on Wednesday.

The Golan Heights was captured by Israel amid war in 1967 and illegally annexed in 1981.

Arguing that the Iranian presence in the Arab Republic and its strong foothold on its borders jeopardizes national security, Israel reserved the right to strike Iran-affiliated targets and weapons shipments destined for Hezbollah.
