No SA casualties reported among 48 dead in flooding in Japan - Dirco

The swollen Kamo River is seen following heavy rain near the Sanjo Ohashi Bridge in Kyoto

A train remains derailed by a landslide caused by heave rains in Karatsu, Saga prefecture, Japan, on Saturday.

"The thoughts of the South African people are with the people of Japan during this hard time‚" Ramaphosa said.

Parts of western Japan have received three times their normal rainfall this month, setting off landslides and leaving many people trapped in their houses and on rooftops, Reuters reported.

KURASHIKI, Japan (Reuters) - The death toll from torrential rain and landslides in western Japan rose to 81 people on Sunday, with dozens still missing after more than 2,000, temporarily stranded in the city of Kurashiki, were rescued.

Television footage showed people, apparently patients and staff, waiting to be rescued on a balcony at Mabi Memorial Hospital, while many cars floated in muddy water and a person was rescued by helicopter from an elderly care facility.

"The situation is extremely risky", wrote a Twitter user in Kochi, a city on the smallest main island of Shikoku, where the rain has been especially intense.

Almost 80 people are believed to be dead in Japan after three days of torrential rain that prompted rivers to burst their banks.

Around 48,000 police, firefighters, and military personnel were called to at least 100 landslide incidents and other emergencies. "If it were her, I wouldn't be able to stop crying".

A three-year-old girl whose home was hit by a landslide in Hiroshima prefecture was found dead by a search team.

Japan Meteorological Agency said a front in western and eastern Japan will continue to bring rain through Sunday, hampering rescue efforts from the storm's torrential rainfall that began earlier in the week.

Okayama prefecture said three people had died, six others were missing and seven were injured, one of them seriously.

More than 1.6 million people were ordered to evacuate their homes, while 3.1 million were put on high alert and urged to do so.

Nearly 2 million people were still subject to evacuation orders, while tens of thousands of rescue workers battled mud, water and rubble to search for survivors stranded in their homes.

Roads remain flooded and damaged across western Japan, with some communities still cut off. Railways have been also affected by the disastrous weather, with many bridges washed away and tracks inundated, according to local media. The orders were not mandatory, and it's unclear how many left their homes. "Without water, I can not clear mud from my house".

Masanori Hiramoto, a 68-year-old farmer, didn't bother observing the Japanese custom of removing his shoes when he entered his ravaged home, the woven tatami mat floors carpeted with mud.
