Putin, Trump to discuss Syria at July meeting

APPresident Donald Trump meets with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the G-20 Summit in Hamburg

Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump will have a detailed discussion about the Syrian conflict when they meet at their first official summit in July, the Kremlin says.

Russia's support for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, whom the USA and its Western allies accuse of using chemical weapons against civilians, has been one of the main flashpoints in the tense relationship between Washington and the Kremlin.

Trump is scheduled to meet with Putin several days after he stops in Brussels for a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit.

The parties intend to discuss a wide range of topics, including the situation in Syria and Ukraine, said the President of the United States.

Trump and President Vladimir Putin of the Russian Federation will meet on July 16, 2018, in Helsinki, Finland.

Zakaria noted that the location of the Trump-Putin meeting is "an interesting choice", given that the historic Helsinki Accords was signed there.

Responding to a question on NATO, Trump reiterated that other countries had to spend more.

Bolton dismissed a question about whether Trump has been more willing to criticize NATO and other USA allies than authoritarian leaders of rival nations, including Putin and North Korea's Kim Jong Un. Trump tweeted after that encounter that there no longer was a nuclear threat from North Korea, an assessment that many diplomatic and nuclear experts dispute. Putin was expelled from the worldwide group in 2014 after Russian Federation moved troops into eastern Ukraine and annexed the Black Sea peninsula of Crimea.

"NATO is very interesting, we'll see what happens there".

Although U.S. intelligence officials have stated unequivocally that Russian agents sought to influence the 2016 presidential election, Trump has continued to cast doubt on those conclusions.

"The election meddling issue was definitely something we talked about", Bolton told the CBS "Face the Nation" programme. We don't want anybody tampering with elections. "And I think he looks at Putin, he thinks there's a guy who controls his own parliament, doesn't have dissent, controls his media, basically has far more power than the size of his country and his economy might indicate, and he wants to be like that", Campbell told Zakaria.

The Obama administration, along with the European Union and individual allied countries, imposed sanctions on Russian Federation over Crimea, and even members of Trump's Cabinet have said they will not be lifted until the situation is resolved.
