Trump, Putin Will Discuss Russian Election Meddling

US special counsel Robert Mueller is leading the investigation of possible Russian interference in the 2016 US

US President Donald Trump refused on Friday to rule out accepting Russia's annexation of Ukraine's Crimea region when he meets his Kremlin counterpart Vladimir Putin next month.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said earlier in the day if Trump raises the issue of Russia's alleged meddling in the USA election at talks in Helsinki, Putin will be ready to once again deny it.

Other topics on the table are Ukraine, Syria, Crimea and issues involving former President Barack Obama.

However, he has been facing backlash from the Opposition Democrats and the think-tank community who believe that Russian Federation under Mr Putin interfered in the 2016 presidential election.

His comments come just one day after Trump himself told reporters aboard Air Force One that "we'll be talking about elections".

"The election meddling issue was definitely something we talked about".

USA intelligence agencies have alleged that Russian hackers had tried to help Trump win the White House, something Russia has flatly denied. Though Trump and Putin often speak warmly of each other, their countries are increasingly at odds when it comes to issues like foreign policy and meddling in the 2016 US election.

Bolton said that was different from the Russians saying there was no meddling at all. "I think Iran is the strategic issue", Bolton said.

"In a statement issue earlier this week, Kremlin had said, "(The) two leaders will discuss the current state and prospects of further development of the Russian-US relations and also vital issues of the global agenda". Trump has been critical of the probe, denying any collusion and arguing that the Democrats should be investigated instead.

At a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit past year, Trump scolded leaders for the cost of the gleaming new Brussels headquarters and for not paying enough to support NATO's defense.

He tweeted Thursday, "Russia continues to say they had nothing to do with Meddling in our Election!".

The president was speaking with Mario Bartiromo on "Sunday Morning Futures" on Fox News when she asked if he'd speak to Putin about allegations the Russians have interfered in American elections.

"Right, but saying "we'll see" suggests it might be", Brennan said.

The president was obviously not intentionally referring to the discord caused in the U.S.by his election and the subsequent actions of him and his administration, but rather the discord which has resulted from the Russian Federation investigation. Putin, Bolton said, "was pretty clear" about Crimea, so the two had to "agree to disagree".

Accepting that Crimea is never to return to Ukrainian control would be a major concession to Russian Federation, which is languishing under tough global trade sanctions over its actions. "That's not the position of the United States".
