What Mexico's new leader really thinks about Donald Trump

Lopez Obrador is estimated to have won between 53 and 59 percent of the vote.

Voters decided in their millions to turn their backs on the two parties which have ruled Mexico for nearly 100 years, and finally give him a chance - sending his supporters into a frenzy.

The leftist politicians joined a handful of world leaders, artists and politicians around the world congratulating Lopez Obrador and his party over their victory in the presidency and both legislative chambers.

Surveys conducted by Consulta Mitofsky and Televisa forecast gubernatorial wins for allies of the Morena party in Chiapas, Morelos, Tabasco and Veracruz, and for head of government in Mexico City. That compares to 26.1 percent for former speaker of Congress and PAN candidate Ricardo Anaya and 20.8 percent for ex-finance minister Jose Antonio Meade of the PRI party. "I will not disappoint you and I will not betray my people", he said.

"We are so happy", said Lucero Robles, a Mexican painter who took to the streets on Sunday night to toast his victory.

Opponents also include the leaders of Mexico's armed forces, with Naval Secretary Vidal Soberon warning late past year that it would make "the state complicit in crime".

That would be the biggest share of the vote since the early 1980s, and would give Lopez Obrador a strong platform both to address Mexico's internal problems and face external challenges like the threat of a trade war with the United States.

Lopez Obrador's coalition is also within striking distance of a congressional majority - a coup for a party contesting its first national elections.

Lopez Obrador has clashed with Mexico's business community, with some critics warning he would pursue Venezuela-style socialist policies that could wreck Latin America's second-largest economy.

Mexican voters are heading to the polls Sunday in a historic election that could reshape the country. He will replace President Enrique Pena Nieto, who was limited to one term in office by the constitution, on December 1.

Experts said such a number would not make a difference in a vote with a clear front-runner, but candidates in future elections might pay more attention to voters north of the border.

Lopez Obrador, 64, successfully tapped voters' anger over a seemingly never-ending series of corruption scandals and horrific violence that left a record 25,000 murders previous year - an orgy of bloodshed fueled by the country's powerful drug cartels. Those talks have been stalled over the Trump administration's demands for higher USA content and a "sunset clause" in the 1994 trade agreement.

"I have been surprised by the complacency around the win by Lopez Obrador, but there is a mindset of giving him the benefit of the doubt", Lawrence said.

Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador could also end up proving a hard diplomatic partner for United States President Donald Trump with his vow to protect immigrants if his previous comments on the US President are anything to go by. "That is what brought us to this", she said.

Obrador, 64, says the two parties are essentially the same "mafia of power", a message that has piqued the interest of many.

Polls have opened in Mexico's presidential and local elections, and front-running candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador is among the first to line up at his polling place in Mexico City.
