Disney quarterly profit falls short as streaming costs rise

Disney's upcoming streaming service could contain a 10-episode, $100 million Star Wars show

"We don't have to be in the absolute volume game", Disney CEO Bob Iger said on an earnings call this week.

USA regulators approved the deal in May. Disney has seen "noticeable improvement in the rate of (subscriber) loss in each of the last four quarters", he said.

Disney anticipates incorporating content from all of its brands into the new service, including Jim Henson's The Muppets, Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm, and National Geographic, the latter of which will also come to Disney through the Fox purchase. Fox Searchlight, which received 20 Academy Award nominations previous year and won best picture for "The Shape of Water", will also be given additional resources, Iger said.

It's been one of the bigger mysteries surrounding Disney's upcoming streaming service: what's going to happen to all those Marvel Studios movies now on Netflix?

While it hasn't been rolled out yet, Disney's streaming service is already generating quite a stir. In the piece we get some insight into what Strauss has planned for the service when it launches next year, including one of its most valued properties, Star Wars.

In response to a question about whether the new streaming service will feature some of the older "Star Wars" titles that Disney had sold TV rights to, Iger largely deflected and noted that going forward, new studio releases will not be encumbered by licensing agreements.

When Disney launches its streaming service next year, don't expect to be able to stream all of Disney's biggest franchises, including Star Wars.

Disney's consumer products and interactive media division saw revenue dip 8% to $1 billion.

Disney shares have risen slightly more than 8 percent since the beginning of the year, while the Standard & Poor's 500 index has risen nearly 7 percent.

Total revenue rose 7% to $15.23bn, driven by box office successes as well as theme parks and resort visits, but missed analysts' $15.34bn forecast.

Revenue from the movie and TV production business jumped 20 percent to $2.88 billion (about Rs. 19,800 crores), boosted by a strong box office for "Avengers: Infinity War" and "Incredibles 2". In the final minutes of trading on Tuesday, shares hit $116.56 (roughly Rs. 8,000), an increase of nearly 10 percent from a year ago.
