'Facts of Life' star Charlotte Rae dies at 92

Charlotte Rae, the actress best known as the matriarch of the NBC boarding school sitcom "The Facts of Life", was remembered Sunday by colleagues and fans as a warm, funny, and versatile pro.

Last year, Rae revealed that she had been diagnosed with bone cancer.

As Edna Garrett, the witty housekeeper from "Diff'rent Strokes", Rae managed to steal the hearts of millions - so much, in fact, that she later earned her own spinoff.

NBC via Getty Images Rae, left, starred as Mrs. Edna Garrett on "The Facts of Life" for seven seasons. She garnered two Tony nominations and an Emmy nod, had guest roles on dozens of television shows and was featured in films like Woody Allen's "Bananas" and the 1979 adaptation of "Hair".

In the early 1960s, she created the role of Sylvia Schnauzer on TV series auto 54 Where Are You? "I'm not in any pain right now", she explained at the time.

Charlotte was a part of the Northwestern University's renaissance of theater and music and comedy along with many great creators and performers of her generation; she spent many insane days-and nights-in Evanston and NY cavorting with roommate, Cloris Leachman, comedy partner, Paul Lynde, and other rising stars of the late 40's and early 50's. A cause of death was not provided.

Donations may be made to the The Actors Fund, Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (Pan-Can) or the Clare Foundation. I lost my hair, but I had attractive wigs. Rae played the beloved TV character until 1986, when health reasons forced her to step down. "If you saw it, you remember her reaching for Treat Williams". She racked up over 90 credits across six decades, making her final appearance in the 2015 Meryl Streep movie Ricki and the Flash.

A reboot of The Facts of Life is in the early stages at Sony Pictures TV with production companies run by Leonardo DiCaprio and Jessica Biel circling the project.

She had two sons, Larry and Andrew, with her ex-husband, John Strauss, who she divorced in 1976 after he came out as bi-sexual.
