Gates Describes Manafort Orders While Defense Hammers 'Secret Life'

Gates also acknowledged at the federal trial in Alexandria, Va., that he may have been wrongly reimbursed for inflated expenses submitted to President Trump's then-inaugural committee.

Both Manafort and Gates were indicted past year on charges of bank and tax fraud as part of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's probe.

On Wednesday, Gates initially testified Manafort told him to be truthful during a 2014 interview with the Federal Bureau of Investigation about offshore shell companies and bank accounts that contained millions of dollars in proceeds from their Ukrainian political work. He's expected to go for at least another hour in questioning with Manafort's attorney's.

Mr Downing forced Gates to admit he had stolen hundreds of thousands of dollars from Manafort by filing bogus personal expenses claims and that he had engaged in an extramarital affair and kept an apartment in London for that objective.

In testimony Tuesday, Gates laid responsibility squarely at Manafort's feet for a series of crimes, as he described to jurors how he repeatedly submitted fake financial documents at Manafort's behest as his former boss became concerned he was paying too much in taxes and, later, that his funds were drying up.

Prosecutors relied on Gates to provide first-hand support of the accusations against Manafort.

Gates appeared shaky at times in answering questions, contrasting sharply with his firm and clear answers to questions by prosecutors.

"When did you start providing false and misleading information to the special counsel's office?" the defence counsel asked bluntly. He also admitted to embezzling money from other employers in the past. "Mr. Manafort had the same path".

The questioning is part of the Manafort defense strategy of presenting Gates to the jury as someone who lies and can not be trusted. He scoffed at the idea that Gates had repented for his actions, noting that prosecutors have said they won't oppose his bid for probation and getting him to acknowledge he had not repaid the money he had taken from Manafort. "I did, to one count, your honour", he said. But prosecutors dropped charges against Gates after the former business partner took a plea deal and agreed to cooperate with prosecutors. On Monday, he testified that he helped Manafort file false tax returns and hide his foreign bank accounts.

Earlier Tuesday, Gates told the court that Manafort would frequently pay for clothing, landscaping and other personal expenses using wire transfers directly from his bank accounts in Cyprus and others in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Gates's testimony against Mr Manafort marked a shattering end to a relationship that made the two political consultants millions working for foreign politicians and led them both to prominent positions on the Trump campaign.

Under questioning by prosecutor Greg Andres, Gates walked the six-man, six-woman jury through the foreign bank accounts used by Manafort to receive payments from Ukrainian politicians - money that was not reported to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). She also said Manafort told Banc of California that his company made almost $4.5 million when the actual amount was $400,000. Downing pressed him on the specifics of their business relationship: which payments to Gates were authorised and which were not.

Gates explained that Manafort's financial difficulties worsened in 2014, when Viktor Yanukovych was no longer in power and the Party of Regions disintegrated.

Manafort has been charged with bank and tax fraud stemming from Mueller's investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election and possible collusion between Moscow and the Trump campaign. These questions about Gates' extramarital tryst also carried faint echoes of Trump, coming less than a month after the release of a tape in which Trump can be heard discussing buying the rights to the story of a woman who claimed to have had an affair with him.

"No doubt at all", Gates replied.
