Local businesses keeping watchful eye on 3D-printed guns debate

Plans for 3D-printed ‘ghost guns’ go online Wednesday as Gov. Cuomo and other pols look to keep them out of New York

Seattle-based U.S. District Judge Robert Lasnik has issued a temporary restraining order hours before the Texas company Defense Distributed was set to release blueprints for 3D guns so that these plans could be downloaded and printed by the public.

The U.S. district judge who made the decision said there's a possibility these guns could cause "irreparable harm".

"Regardless of what a person may be able to publish on the Internet, undetectable plastic guns have been illegal for 30 years", Cox said, noting that federal law makes it "unlawful to manufacture, import, sell, ship, deliver, possess, transfer or receive an undetectable firearm".

Eight states this week received an injunction to prevent Wilson's company-Defense Distributed-from releasing plans today for making an AR-15 without serial numbers by using a 3D printer.

Gun-control advocates said the files would enable individuals to avoid background checks by using 3-D printers to make guns at home.

When it comes to 3D printed gun, Dukes says his concern is practicality and safety.

The company's website had said downloads would begin on Wednesday, but blueprints for at least one gun, a plastic pistol called the Liberator, have been posted on the site since Friday.

But critics are concerned it will see a massive rise in so-called ghost guns, unregistered weapons the government is unaware of and is unable to trace. "Why would we add to that risk for others and make it harder to put in place common sense steps that already exist?" They also fear the technology makes it far too easy for terrorists and people who are too risky to pass criminal background checks to get their hands on guns. Fellow Democrat Edward Markey of MA said, "Donald Trump will be totally responsible for every downloadable plastic AR-15 that will be roaming the streets of our country if he does not act today".

After a years-long court battle, the state department in late June settled the case against Defense Distributed. A zip gun is a complete, smooth-bore weapon without rifling to make the bullet spin for increased accuracy. "The introduction of 3D technology will change that completely because now people will have the capacity to build guns on their own, which will be totally off the grid".

The firm reached a settlement with the Trump administration in June to allow it to legally publish the instructions. "It's certainly a huge global problem, particularly given that many other countries have much stronger gun laws than in America", Lowy said.

The 3D-printed gun controversy first blew up in 2013.

"As the nation rises up and calls for action against gun violence, it is absurd and frightening that the federal government wants to make accessing an automatic weapon as easy as hitting print", he said. "While the technology is evolving, we are going to be watching closely" said John Ham with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms.
