Microsoft announces Xbox All Access

Xbox All Access financing plan announced

Microsoft has officially announced Xbox All Access, following reports regarding the console payment plan emerging last week.

While a blog post cited by Venturebeat is not yet live, ordering options have appeared for United States customers.

The deal will be available until New Year's Eve and is powered by Dell financing. At the end of the 24 month period, the payments end and the Xbox console is yours. The Xbox One S bundle, priced $22 (£17) a month, is about a $130 (£100) cheaper than buying everything it includes. With a two-year commitment locked in, Microsoft will get its money back for the console.

What happens if you don't pay off your bundle within 24 months?

To break it down by price, an Xbox One S retails for $299.99. The company stopped releasing sales numbers for the Xbox One in October 2015 and has more recently focused on the number of people subscribed to its online services as its key metric for tracking growth and success. At the expiry of the Xbox One's remains with the owner as a "credit" for it will be paid over two years to the full. Customers can opt for the $34.99 per month option, which comes with a new Xbox One X 1TB console; or the $21.99 per month one that includes an Xbox One S 1TB console. This will help consumers finance an Xbox console while at the same time paying less than they would buying the hardware and services separately.

It's also worth remembering that once you're outside of your local Microsoft Store's standard return policy, there are no refunds or returns on Xbox All Access purchases.

There are constraints in the subscription plan, however: It's available only in the USA, you have to go to a physical Microsoft store to sign up (and there isn't one in every state) and sign-ups will end after an unspecified "limited time".

"When we launched it, we thought an ever-increasing number of titles might be something that was really important to gamers", Decker said to Gi.Biz in an interview.

While it might be taking a hit on console profit, players using Xbox Games Pass could be more likely to purchase more games outside of the subscription, which means a larger customer base and, eventually, profits, for Microsoft.
