Northern California blazes now largest in state history

The wildfires have claimed nine victims and continue to grow across northern California, including the Carr fire burning about 162 miles north of Sacramento and two other fires collectively called the Mendocino Complex burning about 90 miles north of San Francisco. It killed two firefighters and four residents and displaced more than 38,000 people.

The Mendocino Complex fire is burning close to the shoreline of Clear Lake, the largest natural freshwater lake entirely within the state of California. "It's pretty doggone hot and dry, and it's going to stay that way". Look how fast this Mendocino Complex went up in ranking. The fire is entering its third week, with 163,000 acres burned and more than 1,000 homes lost. They made good progress on dozer line running from the Eel River northeast to below the community, and are looking for opportunities to place indirect line across the northern edge of the fire.

But Cal Fire officials said there has not been a situation where crews needed water and couldn't access it.

More than 14,000 fire-fighters are battling a dozen of major blazes throughout California.

The Ferguson Fire near Yosemite National Park has killed two and has charred about 91,000 acres.

In Shasta County, the Carr fire located near Redding, California has burned entire neighborhoods and forced thousands to flee.

The Australian crews were first sent to Boise, Idaho, for training at the National Interagency Fire Centre; and joined United States and Canadian firefighters in the field on Tuesday. It was listed as the sixth most-destructive in state history, having destroyed more than 1,600 structures, according to Cal Fire.

As of Monday morning, the blaze has consumed 273,664 acres and destroyed 75 homes, as well as 68 other structures, according to Cal Fire, the California agency responsible for fire protection.

Fire officials have condemned the presidents comments, saying that they are not in fact struggling to source enough water to contain the fires.

Also, evacuation warnings in areas of Mendocino and Lake counties have been lifted. In addition, "the rates of mortality from fire, insects, and disease are about three times as high on national forest lands as they are on private lands regulated under California's strict environmental laws", he said.

Peter Gleick, one of California's leading experts on Western water resources as president of the Oakland-based Pacific Institute, said that Trump appeared to be seizing on the wildfires to side with farmers on a separate debate over how to allocate California's finite water resources among farmers, cities, fish and wildlife.

"The problem here is he's not acknowledging the role climate change is playing in California's fire problem, and the scale of the problem is far beyond anything he's talking about doing", Westerling says.

Firefighters battle to stop the spread of the massive fire in California.

The last time active-duty military personnel were mobilized was in September 2017, when 200 soldiers from JBLM were mobilized to help battle the North Umpqua Complex wildfires in OR for 30 days, NIFC said.
