Ohio's back-to-school tax holiday starts Friday

Ohio to have a sales-tax holiday

While the first day of school might be about a month away, you can get a head start on some of that back to school shopping thanks to the yearly tax-free weekend.

The sales tax weekend ended at 11:59pm Sunday.

The sales tax was waived on purchases of clothing and school supplies of less than one-hundred dollars and on computers less than 15-hundred dollars.

"Our Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday is another way we are providing relief to Wisconsin's hardworking families", said Governor Walker. The local tax break on the Second Amendment Holiday will remain in place. "I filed my bill as a duplicate to Lance's because it seemed clear that bill had the best chance of passing".

Chandler is the Wisconsin Secretary of Revenue and he explained what the state's program is all about.

Gordon Gough, president of the state Council of Retail Merchants, says consumers will get the "lion's share of benefits". It also extends to baby clothing and office materials for both in-person and online purchases made during the qualifying period. He also encouraged people to look at the Chamber and see the options they have for buying and shopping locally, including a Chamber gift certificate.

She adds taxes can be avoided on layaway items, as long as transactions take place this weekend.

But lawmakers could seek to reinstate the sales tax holidays before then beginning in next year's Regular Session.
